Help,

Before I transfer the remaining assets of my estate to the local dealer I'd like to have some clue as to the problem. Attached is the sound file of the noise just after first start. After warming runs good, Rest of day, no noise on starts.

2004 MDX , 77k miles, left outside at night in southern california. All regular mainenance done per spec.

Thank you in advance for the insight.

Right after a cold start, with the HIVAC system set to auto, the system will signal the air conditioning compressor to come on. On my car I get a slight 'clunk', as the compressor clutch cycles on for the first time. I never hear it cycle off/on after that, only on a cold start.

I'm wondering if your drive belt is a bit out of tension, and maybe you're getting a touch of slippage as the compressor comes on. As a test, before you shut the car down for the evening, turn your HIVAC system off, and see if you get that same noise on subsequent morning cold starts.

The drive belt has a self tensioning pulley that may have frozen or lost its tension spec.

Good ideas. Tried turning off the AC in the evening and the first start sounds the same. I'll go with the drive belt tension issue which makes sense. I'll let you know what the dealer says when they check it.

Thanks again for the opinion.

Of course they have no clue and say the drive belt is fine. They speculate the starter unwinding after start but can't prove without holding the car hostage. They think sound file is not that helpful. Oh well guess I'll live with it unless someones got a better way to test the issue.

Its your starter for sure! It sounded just like mine did. Might wanna check your battery too.
