I am looking at a 2001 MDX. I have some concerns about the things I have read here on the forum and would like some information about this type of vehicle. The one I am looking at has 86,000 miles and looks to be in decent condition. I have a 97 TL that has been wonderful for me! It is a reliable car, but the family is growing and it is just not carseat friendly. I'm very aprehensive about getting rid of a great, quality made car for an SUV that has mixed reviews. The 2001 is in my price range right now so that is the one I will have to get if I feel confident that it will serve me as well as my 97 TL. I don't want to make a mistake and trade down, if you know what I mean. My concern is the big things, i.e. the engine quality, transmission, etc. I know all cars are going to have little things go wrong, but I am worried about the quality of the big things that will cost quite a lot to repair. Can anyone give me some advice about this model and year that can lead me in the right direction? I am very pleased with Acura/Honda products so I just would like some guidance about this particular model. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Great truck. Interior second to none. Very roomy.

These are some of more common problems with the MDX.

EGR valve failure
IAC motor failure
SRS control module failure
Front engine mount failure (usually only last 30k)
Front struts - weak by 90k
Occasionally a trans - mine is still going strong at 145k
Noisy blower motor

Other then that, I feel it's very reliable. Usually the MDX will not leave you stranded unless your tranny goes out.

I've taught of trading the MDX in and buying something new, but I have to spend over $35k to get something that I would enjoy more then the MDX. I could of purchased a fully loaded accord for $28k, but it seemed like a downgrade.

Personally, I'd never consider a 2001 or 2002 MY, and I'd think twice about a 2003, all due to transmission problems. 2004 seems to be the first year where the tranny problems were completely gone.

If you're less risk averse than me you might be comfortable with those model years, but I would not consider them.

We got an '01 as a CPO a couple of years ago, and we love it. The main problems we've run into are:

  • Front struts - replaced at 80k
  • front motor mount - replaced at 80k
  • right motor mount - replaced at 92k
  • parking brake - cable has needed tightening 4 times since we've owned it
  • CD Changer - in-dash 6-CD changer jams. In process of shopping to replace it at the moment.

The minor problems:

  • Auto-dimming mirror - after dome light fuse blew, all the dimming fluid (or whatever it is) leaked out. the mirror is permanently tinted now.
  • Passenger-side rear door dome light switch - just discovered last night that it needs replaced.

Other than those, it is an awesome vehicle - when we got it, all of the TSB's had been performed, and any other glaring problems that were found. The CPO warranty has been a lifesaver for the major problems - I wouldn't buy one with out it, and I don't think you can get an '01 CPO any more.

I say go for it. I bought an '01 in June 2007. The best Acura/Honda I've ever owned. My sixth Acura/Honda car to date. One of my favorite vehicles. Had I read this forum and knew of the transmission problems I probably would of thought twice. I went in without knowing, and it's been fine. Basic scheduled maintenance performed so far. I got mine with 90k, with the exception of a couple minor quality issues (hard to replace dead light bulbs in interior) it continues to be a great car.
