I am looking at a 2001 MDX (not the touring edition) and was wanting some info on the navigation system. Is it acutally a GPS system and how exactly does it work? Thanks

Hmm, I thought the NAV was only available on the Touring but I guess it was an option back then.

Yes, the stock NAV is GPS based and also has a dead-reckoning system in case it loses the signal temporarily. For technical info on how it actually works, I guess you can google GPS navigation. You can get a user manual online on how to use it but it's pretty intuitive with the old touch screen. Just play around with it and you'll discover its functions. The Acura NAV is one of the better ones out there and allows you to change destination on the fly.

The unit is under the passenger seat and you get DVD updates from acuranavi.com or secondhand.

On 2001 MDXs, the NAV was available as a stand-alone option on either Base (Premium) or Touring MDXs. I believe this was changed for either '02 or '03 model year, where Touring package was required in order to get NAV.

This is what it looks like. Is this the Navigation system with GPS? If so, how do you program your destination and such?

Thanks

that's not nav, that's just the trip computer. I've got the same one :D

Nav has a fancy-schmancy color screen on it.

I can also confirm sloe's reply. I had an 01 touring w/nav and the screen is much different.

As others mentioned, this is definitely NOT the Navi display. Navi display would look something like this:

could this be converted? Is it as simple as taking the trip comp out and putting in the nav? or does it control the alarms and stereo?

As others have posted, if you do a search you will see this has been discussed at length in several other threads. It is NOT plug-and-play and would require several thousand dollars of hardware and installation costs. It is cost-prohibitive to do.

If you want Nav in that car, just buy a good, large-screen portable GPS from Garmin or TomTom and put it on the dash.

The built in one in the '01 is awesome, especially given its age. The portable ones have pretty much caught up now, plus they have traffic info and other stuff.

Agree. :4:

This is the best way to go, to get navigation into a non-navi MDX. The added bonus with a portable navigation unit is that you can use it in multiple cars, not just your MDX.
