2007 MDX - second time with this transmission problem - Click HERE for Original Thread

I got my 2007 MDX last February. Within a couple of months I had an incident where I took about a 15-mile trip on the freeway, exited and turned onto a residential street and then into my sister's apartment complex. The transmission stopped shifting properly and was revving when I accelerated. I pulled into a parking spot and could not put the car in park. The gearshift was stuck in drive. No matter what, I could not change gears. I finally turned the car off. Of course, I couldn't get the keys out of the ignition. I called Acura and they sent someone to tow the car. It was after hours.

The next day the dealership called and said it was working fine and they could not duplicate the problem. What!? How can you go from not shifting at all to not having any problem? They checked it over and could find nothing wrong. I took it home and had no further problems with it.

Now today I had the identical thing happen again. I drove about 10-15 miles, got off the freeway, turned into a McDonald's drive-through. I never put the car in park. I went to pull out and head home and the transmission was not shifting properly and was revving loudly again. I had to drive the one mile home very slowly. When I got in my driveway, the car would not shift to park. It would not shift at all...stuck in drive. I turned the ignition off and I'm calling Acura.

Has anybody had this problem with their 2007? This is scary stuff. What if that had happened while I was going 60 mph on the freeway?

Have the dealer inspect the vehicle each and every time this happens. Generate a paper trail. Down the road this thing is going to take a dump on you. If it involves an accident (hope no one is injured) you will have the documentation for whatever you have to claim against Acura. Even if it doesn't involve an accident you might save yourself $4500 on a new tranny once the warranty is out. If you bring it in enough you might qualify for a Lemon Law remedy. Keep us posted on what happens. I'm sure a lot of '07 owners are shaking in their boots about now after reading of your experience. Good Luck!

Okay, so I texted my husband to let him know what was going on (he's in a meeting). I waited a couple of hours and went out to the car. After a little jiggling and a couple of tries, it shifted into park for me! I started it up and drove around the block and it seems to be shifting normally again. WTF!!

I swear I'm not nuts. I tried everything before. It's doing exactly what happened last time. It will be a waste of time to take it to the dealer now. I know they will just tell me they can't duplicate the problem and look at me like I'm crazy.

Should I contact my dealership or is there a number for Acura, to report repeat problems of this nature?

Call the dealership back and tell them it has happened again and you are afraid to drive it because it is now a safety issue. Tell them you are bringing it back in and want the local Acura representative involved immediately. Have them give you a loaner and keep it until they can duplicate the problem. That at least let's them know you are serious. Bringing it in muliple times also starts to fulfill the lemon law requirements should you have to go that route. There is a number for Acura customer service but the real person who gets involved in problems that the dealer can't solve is the local rep. Good Luck with solving the issue!

Get Acura involved. This thing won't go away. There's a problem somewhere and it will only get worse. This is not normal, no matter what they tell you. You paid $40K for a reliable car and this is NOT a reliable car. EVERY TIME it happens have the dealer involved!!!

Dumb question but I need to ask. You aren't accidently putting it into Sport shift mode, are you?

This symptom sounds like what I experienced in my TL a month or so ago. Erratic revving, tranny not wanting to shift and when it did, it was a hard shift. Really thought the tranny crapped out again. Dealer checked it out and could not find anything wrong with the tranny or the fluid. Turns out it was the throttle position sensor (TPS) sending false reading to the ECU. ECU was reset and it was fine for a couple of days. When the same symptom returned, thanks to some info from the TL forum, I cleaned out the throttle body (which I should have done before) and TPS and so far it has been fine.

I have no such problems on my '07. I would also echo the suggestions of the others to get it back to the dealer. Might be some bad sensor or the tranny. Either way keep us posted.

i think phins2rt meant you accidentally shifted to "manual" mode of the sequential sportshift wherein you can "manually shift up or down". if you were, that explains the revving that you've just experienced. the X is telling you to shift to higher gear by manually shifting up. you could not get the key out of ignition because you were still in gear, not in park. dumb(er) question- did you notice if your gear says "D" or "M"?

I agree with Phins2rt and gotMDX- the sport (manual) shifter is in all versions of the 07+ MDX. You pull the shift lever to the left, and you stay in one gear. If you want to shift up (from 3 to 4) you push the lever up and release it. To downshift, you pull and release it. The only time the X will auto shift while you're in Manual mode is when you come to a complete stop. It then downshifts all the way to 1, and holds it in 1 (Low) gear until you push the lever forward to go to 2,3,4, and 5.
Your symptoms describe this perfectly.

I agree with the others. If you can't get the key out when stopped, that means the car is still in gear.

I was in Drive, not manual. I had not shifted gears since I started my trip, so obviously I had been in the correct gear all along or I would have had problems from the beginning....right?

And yes, I know I couldn't get the key out of the ignition because the car wasn't in park. I could not put it in park because I could not move the gear shift - period. It was locked up and could not be moved in any way whatsoever.

Later when I went out to the car, after about 2 hours, it was "unstuck" and I was able to shift the gears into park. I have witnesses! argh
