Hi guys,
I just had my 2003 MDX in for a 60,000 miles services. The technician recommended the following:
Fuel Injector cleaner: $140
EGR cleaner: $170
Intake cleaner: $130
What are your thoughts? Should I spend the money on this?
I have never used any fuel system cleaner but I was thinking that I would just run some through prior to my next oil change and save the $. What about the rest?
Thanks in advance! |

Find another shop, quickly!
I've never seen any of those items recommended in the manual. And I haven't read any posts of other owners having had those recommendations made to them (especially if your not having issues with it running rough).
Not only do I think those maintenance items are unneeded, but the prices being charged look very high.
IMO....you can save a bunch of money over those rates by using some good 93 octane fuel and throw in a bottle of techron for good measure. |

| If you buy the whole package, will the shop throw in some snake oil for free? |

What do you think that 93 octane fuel is going to do?

Thanks guys. I will try out some fuel injector cleaner. Do I need to change the oil shortly after using it?
Also I have mainly been loading it up with 76, Shell or Chevron Premium 92. I haven't seen 93 around here in WA???
I haven't really noted any problems with it however I'm not the primary driver. My wife is. It does seem a little slow but then again I'm coming from driving a 2008 TL Type S (LOVE IT!!!) :) |

| The fuel injection cleaner goes into the GAS, not the oil, unless I misunderstood your last post. REPEAT: PUT THE CLEANER IN THE GASOLINE TANK!! You can get 6 bottles at Costco for about $15. I throw in a bottle into the FUEL TANK at each oil change just for good measure. Don't know if it works or not but I feel better. |

From the list of 'mechanic recomendations', it seems that there is insinuation of a symptom of poor perfomance or combustion. If congo feels his car is not running optimally or pinging, raising the octane will rule out the possibility that fuel is one of the issues (assuming he's using an octane that does not 'ensure' appropriate detonation).
And I'm not getting into a long debate about octane, cause there's no right or wrong answer for regular use. There is however a 'common sense' answer if you are having performance issues that you are trying to diagnose. Nuff said:D
congo.....92 is just as good as 93, actually 91 is the max you can take advantage of. It's really a regional thing on what's available. In my area the options are 86, 89, and 93. I believe 91 is what Acura recommends to ensure there is no pre-detonation. |

Yes in the fuel cleaner in the fuel tank - I know:D Just didn't know if I should do it now or wait another 1000 miles which is when the next oil change is.
Thanks again guys! |

| sorry if I ministerpreted your previous post but it sounded to me like you were gonna put it in the oil. You can put the cleaner in at any time. I do it with my oil changes so it's easy for me to remember when I did it. Totally up to you, of course. Good luck! |
