I ordered the Acura ski rack from Tim at the Acura dealer in New York. The rack has a lock on each section(2)--when I tried to unlock the front section the entire lock came out with the key!! Could not get the thing to open at all--so.......had to put the skiis inside--was really worried about cutting the seats with the edges--so wrapped everything in towels. Not happy with this rack at all!! BTW, my dealer wanted $315 and I got it from Tim for $141--he couldn't believe it.. I need to call him and get a replacement..

Also, we had 5" of snow here and the wipers did not perform at all. On the drivers side it is missing the top quarter of the windshield and on the passengers side there are many streaks that are several inches wide that go over the entire side. I am checking into getting some different blades put on--can't believe I have to do that on a brand new car!!!

Not that happy at that moment!!!
i was feeling your pain this weekend! when we arrived at lake tahoe late friday nite, the lock had frozen up on me, and i wasn't able to open the damn rack! i had to go inside, and heat some water, and pour it on the rack. not please to say the least....

when we finally got back to san francisco, i greased both locks with WD40, and now they're OK (for now....)

for future reference, definitely add some type of lubricant to the locking mechanism of the factory acura ski rack, or you'll find yourself pulling out the lock cylinder, or the inability to fully turn the key and open the rack.

good luck!

thanks for the tip--I will put on the WD40 after we get the lock to stay put in the rack!! I called Tim and he said it would be under warranty....so I'm taking into the dealer on Friday--hope that can get it fixed as we are going skiing on Sat.
They said that a snowboard could go on this rack too--but I don't see how one could fit--they must have another rack for snowboards?? Does anyone know???
Simon-

Can you tell me how the ski rack attaches to the rack? Do you have to take the roof rack off and fit bolts into the channel, or do they clamp onto the cross bars?

When I bought my MDX the sales rep had a price sheet with the ski rack at $300+, but now the service department is quoting me around $220 installed; if the install isn't too involved Tim's $141 is looking good!

No, you don't have to take the roof rack off--the ski rack comes with 4 holders, 4 spacers aand 4 bolts. The instructions say to install the rubber spacer into the holder and then insert the holder into the ski attachment(their word for rack). Then install a bolt with a lock washer and a plain washer through the hole in the rubber spacer and into the attachment(rack).

The bolts were not long enough to go through so we did not use the spacers--didn't seem like they were really necessary....will have my dealer check that out on Friday when he puts the lock back in. Maybe they will just glue it back in..not really sure..that's probably how it was in there in the first place!!

Very easy to do--will let you know about those rubber spacers.
OK, thanks for the info. Sounds as if I have just added another task to my weekend projects list!

Hope all goes well with getting the lock back in.

--Update on broken lock on ski rack

I just returned from dealer--and they gave me a NEW rack--really happy about this-and they used the spacers--I may have had them upside down or something...? they act as a cushion for brackets..

They are also ordering some new wiper blades--they didn't have any in stock!!

Overall very happy with the dealers response.
