2004 MDX. I've been experiencing a harsh metal sound for about 3 weeks at the first start up for the day. It only lasts a couple of seconds. I assumed it was related to the cold weather. It was that I wouldn't hear it again all day no matter how many times I stopped and started. Then, this past weekend with it being below zero it was parked outside for a few hours and each time it made the noise.
I found this forum by a Google search and the consensus was that it was the Starter. It just so happened that I had an oil change scheduled today and when I brought it in I discussed this with the dealer. They checked it out and said they can't find anything wrong. No surprise there. They told me to keep an eye on it and bring it back in if it continues. No surprise with this answer either. Now, I guess I'll have to make arrangements to drop the car off on evening in hopes of getting a loaner and leaving it there.
Just can't win. |

| Try turning the AC off before you shut down. The metallic noise may just be the AC clutch bearing when its cold. |

Thanks for the suggestion, but the a/c and/or heat is off before I shut off the car every time.
Actually, I just went to the car which has now been sitting in the garage for 3 hours (it's 20 degrees out, 32 in the garage) and started it. It makes the noise but not as pronounced - the last part of the start sounding like something is winding down. The longer the car sits and gets cold the louder the noise is at start up. |

| Yea, its probably best to have the dealer have it overnight to hear the noise. |

| Sounds consistent with the noise I had from the engine on starts. The dealer replaced the starter under the extended warranty. Sound is now gone. |

Thanks for the help.
I'm 90% sure that is the problem also.
The dealer doesn't want to have me spend money if that isn't it. I already made an appt. to bring the car in and leave it there for as long as it takes.
I also asked around and that noise is something to do with the "bendix" on the starter.
I'd rather be safe to get it fixed then get stranded somewhere. |

Update on problem.
I took it into the dealer and I was no sooner home (about an hour drive) and they were calling me that it is the starter. So, why couldn't they tell me this last week? Yeah, the typical, someone else looked at the problem.
So, they had the starter in stock and replaced it - $575 total.
It purrs like a kitty on starting now.
Four years old this March and waiting for other things to start happening. |
