I just wanted to drop a note to parties interested. I am totally unhappy with my 08’ MDX. Last week my wife shut the car door and the window cracked. I took it back to the dealership (Champion Acura in Houston) and they immediately said it was a rock hit. Now mind you there was a tiny dot the size of a pen mark if you were to put a pen to paper- the dot that the pen would leave behind. Anyway, the dealer would not listen and said I needed to talk to the Acura rep, well he has cancelled and they have not rescheduled. So, I called Honda, which was annoying in itself that I cannot email them (they only have a phone number), I have to call. The Honda (not Acura) representative sent a notification to Champion with my cell number- has anyone called me back…… NOPE!!! So now I have a 08’ MDX with a cracked windshield that is less than 30 days old and no one will even call me back.
The overall fell that I am getting is like I bought a Honda, not an Acura. I do have a 06’ Odyssey EXL and so far so good. But you have to remember I paid another 20,000.00 for this vehicle, I do not expect to be treated like I purchased a Honda.
Also, I filled out a questionnaire and did Honda call me back when I complained- NOPE! |

I am not sure whether you are writing about the door window or the wndshield as you use both terms. Regardless, the answer is really the same. Once either one has been violated by a rock or any other foreign object the damage is done. If it was the door window than I really would have expected it to shatter at the moment it was hit.
If it was the windshield it would not have instantly been shattered, but would have been left in a state that another foreign disturbance, in this case the door closing, would cause further damage.
When I lived in Texas 30 years ago it was a zero deductible state as regards broken glass. Unless that has changed just have the glass replaced and go on about your life.

It is the windshield and Tx does have a deductable on windshields. I could post a picture. If it had a big rock chip, sure I would not be complaining. The fact that it was 10 days old with no nicks anywhere, it had 800 miles on it.
I just went to the Infinity website and you can email the. I emailed them and they got back with me in 5 minutes!!!
Acura seems to just want to sell you a car and then be done with you |

Do a search in this forum an see what you come up with. I seem to recall some folks complaining about the weak glass used in the windshield. As for me, I've got a little over 5K miles on my X and have taken a couple of hits, and so far mine's holding up, but all it takes is one well placed rock. This happened on my wife's Accord, and we were left with a chip that gradually turned into a crack that went up the entire right-hand side of the windshield. Mind you, this process took a couple of weeks, but the end result was the same.
As for redress, unless your insurance policy covers windshield replacement (mine does -- no deductible/no rate increase), you're probably on your own since this would fall under the "wear and tear" clause of the warranty. Mind you, considering the age of the vehicle in question, if I were your dealer I'd replace it free of charge as a goodwill gesture, but I guess they're not interested in retaining you as a customer. In the end, it's their loss.

The quality of customer service "care" IMHO has been going down south since the past decade. This is not happening only to Honda/Acura but many others dealers as well such as Toyota, Nissan.... Lexus & BMW however to me are still holding up (we own Lexus '07 ES350 & '08 BMW 328). Most definitely Acura is a "luxury" class & SHOULD NOT be comparing to Honda. When it is brought to the table for Honda - Acura comparison then by all mean, ... well you fill in the blank.
I bought the MDX is mainly because I'm a huge Honda fan since the 80's. It is a fine piece of machine & best bargain for its size & class. Don't let the poor quality of Acura customer care gets you. Enjoy the winner from the big "EIGHT" (best SUV out of 8 big boys fr CarAndDriver). ;) |

Just curious, but are you totally unhappy with your '08 MDX, or with the service on your '08 MDX? |

craniotes - you hit the nail on the head!! This is not the first vehicle that I have bought from Champion, it is the 3rd. So, I am even a repeat customer and they treated me this way.
With all of my crying I am doing, I need to post a picture so you all will understand. Like I said if it had been a blatant rock chip I would understand but, it is not and they aired on pure "my fault" |

Highcountrymdx – Well the MDX does have a few issues that I do not like.
1. The seats stain instantly from blue jeans
2. the plastic wood trim scrapes off easily with just a nick from a finger nail
3. The motor is sweet but lacks a little on the low end but, I am okay with that.
4. The big hit is the total lack of service from Honda and Champion- do you know that I still have not heard back from either!!!
Everything gets amplified when you feel like you have been mistreated. |

Sorry to hear about your issues with the windshield and dealings with Honda. At this point I wouldn't give up on Honda stepping in and helping though. I had a glass break issue on an Accord years ago while the car was out of warranty and the dealer went to Honda and I was granted a free replacement. Situation was a little different (sunroof), but given your car's age there is a chance. Maybe they will come through.
Not that it necessarily matters, but similarly, I had an issue with a Lexus years ago where I had brought in my car to the dealer on three different occasions complaining of a problem with the transmission shifting only to get the "can't duplicate customer complain" response. As soon as the car was out of warranty the same dealer says "yep, we see the problem...you need a new transmission and we aren't going to cover it." When I went to the national office after not being able to get resolution with the dealer I was told that the national office doesn't get involved in issues like that and that I was SOL. No more Lexus vehicles for me and I just love sharing that story with family and friends...and anyone else that will listen.
Now for a less sympathetic comment. Let me apologize in advance for this bit of a rant.
As for the complaint about blue jeans making stains on the leather...you aren't the first to complain about that, but your complaint is as silly as all the others. If you buy ANY car manufacturer's very light colored leather and you sit in them in blue jeans (particularly dark jeans) they will stain. If that's a problem, buy darker leather in the future, but complaining about the company that produced the vehicle is nuts.
BTW - I bought the ebony interior...maybe I should complain that is shows dust. At least it's safe from my jeans. |

In response to your notes above.
1. Rookie mistake for not getting black leather.
2. Plood or "real" wood trim WILL get nicks regardless. They are not made out of titanium.
3. The motor is sweet, you got this right.
4. Lack of service... True, but this wouldn't stop me from buying Honda in the future.

I find it hard to believe that your windshield cracked just from closing the door. Are you sure there wasn't a crack to begin with and it just wasn't noticed? Is it an actual crack or a chip? A chip can be repaired. It sounds like you are more dissatisfied with the service than the vehicle itself. |

Safety glass. Yea, its designed to stay intact in a big piece. You can still have small bits and shards, but nothing deadly. |
|
|
| slowhand23 |
Windshields are laminated glass. The crack is a result of stress such as a stone impact or burr on the flange itself. Stone impacts may not crack for some time depending on severity. However, continuous body flexes add additional stress to the impact point and a crack will emerge and sometimes grow.
A simple test is to take a ballpoint pen and follow along the crack, if the pen stops or falls in a hole you have found a impact location. If no impact points are found and the crack starts or ends under the w/shield molding, it's possibly related to the glass itself, mating flange or the installation process which would be more mfg. related causes.
Just my 2 cents & good luck!! |

Sorry I don't buy it. I've had two other cars recently with light gray and beige leather neither stained like my MDX with taupe. Agreed ebony is the way to go. My vote was for ebony but the salesperson convinced my wife the taupe was durable and easy on maintenance and since she drives it 95% of time... |

Ok that SOFT SAFETY glass is being increasingly used by luxury SUVs.
My VW Touareg/same build as Porsche Cayenne, took one small pebble at 30mph and the windshield needed replacement.
Yes, that Taupe stains easily, because it is POROUS and NOT SEALED.
I have found Meguiar's Leather Wipes to be very effective to quick-clean/wipe and preserve softness.
I also use Lexoil products, for more intense periodic cleaning and moisturizing/sealing.
I have no affiliation/stock with/in any of these brands/companies.

| Meguiar's Leather Wipes and Lexol are the 2 products I use with typically good results. They weren't able to get the final bit of blue off the seats. The dealer was able to get the blue off, not sure what they used. |

I agree on the leather staining - I have Taupe and my black leather jacket stains the arm rest really easily. I used BMW leather cleaner and fixed it right up. New jacket ? Ditto on that Oh So Sweet engine.
On the rest of it though I gotta agree with Fabvsix's dog - too cute (at least I think its a dog) ! |

I am truly sorry your windshield must be replaced, but if something actually hit the windshield, why would you expect Acura to replace it free?
Same thing happened to me with our two day old 06 Ridgeline, but I never expected Honda to replace it.
Acura isn't saying it's your fault, they are saying it isn't their fault.

My windshield got hit with a rock, too. Put a hole in it, too. The difference is that I'll have the windshield replaced and get an insurance payment for part or all of the repair cost.
I do not expect Acura or any other dealership to pay for body damage to my vehicle, including cracked windshields and door dings. |

shootist - do you work in the auto industry?
like I have said before, it it was blatant, I would get it fixed- no problem! |

I too, disagree with this comment.
My 2004 Volvo V70R has extra soft leather in "Gobi" color, that is to say a medium tan (between parchment and taupe in the MDX). My car has 67k miles on it, and is driven regularly in jeans, both by my wife and myself. There are NO blue stains on the leather.
Again, it is VERY soft and requires cleaning for dirt, etc. But the only staining is from my leather belt, and that is tough to get off. NO stains from blue jeans.
Problem leather is not uncommon - the "Nordkap" interior (dark bule) of the 2004-2007 R's has trouble with the dye coming off. |

Do NOT use dishwashing liquid. It will work, but is too harsh....it is designed to remove grease, remember!
If you want to go this route, use water and Woolite, or another "delicates" fabric cleaner. |

A great product for DEEP cleaning leather is Leatherique. It really works well, but it's an intensive product to use. Not something you can just "do", you have to plan around it.

Update- the Acura rep came by Champion to look at my windshield. Acura will pay my insurance deductible to have my windshield replaced. So it will cost me nothing for a new windshield. Champion was nice enough to set me up with a loaner vehicle (MDX 08’).
My satisfaction is growing. |
