I want to thank you for the wonderful replies (regarding his paintings). My father will be so happy to read them. He sent me some info on our LOUISIANA ACADIAN history. I was amazed by it......My father LOVES France....Here is why....
Your name Landry can be of French and German origin. The old German name LANDRIC is made up of Land (Land, Country) and ricja (rule, govern) became LANDRI in old French. You are descended from SAINT LANDRY, Bishop of Paris. He founded the Hotel Dieu (Hospital in Paris) and died in 1656 and buried in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France. (Not many people can say that they descended from a Saint).
Our Landry and Comeaux familes left France to seek a better life in ACADIA (Now Nova Scotia) in the early 1600's. Both families are listed in the first Census of Acadia 1671. The Landry family came from LOUDON, France and the Comeaux family came from DIJON, FRANCE. (Your GGG Grandfather was Albert Landry, and your GGG Grandmother was Euginie Comeaux.) After the Acadians were expelled from Acadia by the English, in 1755, we believe that Rene Landry made his way to Louisiana in 1765 and one of his descendants Terville Landry married Irma Segura in New Iberia, from who we all descend. Francisco Segura was one of the original settlers in New Iberia. His son, Raphael Segura built the lovely old Segura House in 1812, now owned by your cousins, Tom and Eleanor Landry Holleman. (Picture attached). My mother is a descendant of the FIELD family. Originally the name was DE LA FIELD in France. He ancestors went to ENGLAND with William the Conquerer and eventually spelled their name FIELD. Four Field brother went to Virgina from England, two of them moving on to ILLINOIS. One of your Field ancestors founded MARSHALL FIELD'S famous store in Chicago, ILL. Two of my mothers grandfathers were doctors and her father John Field, was an engineer with Carrier Air Conditioning, Co. During the great War (WWII) the fields moved to the East Coast, where his company installed some of the first Air conditioning in the major stores and businesses in Philadelphia, New York City, and in Richmond Virginia. When John Field and Helen Morash Field moved to California in the early 60's his last big job was the installation of the Air Conditioning System in the San Francisco International Airport. If you visit Uncle James, you will fly into this very same airport.
My parents met at USL in 1950 who both graduated with degrees. Al with a BA and Elaine with a B of Music. We were married in 1952 producing 3 healthy offsprings. I served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956. I entered Tulane Univ. recieving a Masters Degree in Architecture in 1960. We moved to New Iberia in 1961 (Tabasco Capitol)
To date there have been at least 28 Landry graduates from Tulane University, 12-15 from LSU and 10 or more from USL. We have at least 8 doctors in the family including my father and his brother Dr. Edmond Landry, Several lawyers, one Judge, two Ursuline nuns and one Jesuit Priest.
As my dads says in closing: Be well, Be happy, Have a good sense of humor, hold no gudges, do good work and keep in touch...
I hope you enjoyed this bit of history regarding my background......
