First I want to say thank you for this forum because I think that I almost made a costly mistake!
I was quoted $800 for 60,000 miles maintenance service from my local Acura dealer. Edmunds.com states that this service interval for my area is approximately $345. When I asked the local Acura service department why such a discrepancy, I was told because Edmunds does not take our extreme conditions into consideration. I just left it at that.
What I want to know from others is if my chosen course of action seems acceptable and the prices seem reasonable:
DIY:
Change air and pollen filter = $51.85 (includes s&h from www.hondacuraworld.com)
Dealership:
Oil change w/filter = 36.00
Rotate & balance tires w/brake inspection=$35 (if they honor their expired coupon that is still on their website)
Rear Differential flush=$90
Total is approximately $213
Any comments and/or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you! |

| All of those items you can do yourself. If you can do the pollen filter change the remaining items are a no-brainer. Buy your fluids at Honda and save some $$$. "Inspect" your brakes and save the hourly labor charge for LOOKING at them. You can look at them just as easily and come to the same conclusion(s). Good luck! |

| Update: the dealership called and they are going to honor the expired coupon; therefore, the rotate & balance with brake inspection included is $35.95 plus tax. |

Oil & filter you can DIY too.
R&B, hmm, it will be easier if you have a lift to rotate. To balance, you need the machine. But if your car/steering wheel doesn't chatter, don't bother.
Rear Differential Flush: No such flush thing there. Just replace the VTM-4 fluid. All you need is a gallon (only need about 3 qts) VTM-4, around $16 from Honda dealer, remove the drain and refill bolts, and a suction gun to fill the new fluid back in. No big deal at all.
As to brake inspection, yes, you can look by yourself, but you need to know what you are looking at and how to interpret what you see there - abnormal wear, leak, rotor scoring, etc. But yours is a 05, I don't expect the brake will have any problems. |
