I realized the other day this navi in there sucks. The POI in it are terrible. I went to search for a common ski mountain and the damn thing didnt even have it listed.

Is there any way to put another navi unit in our cars? I have a pioneer Z2 that i simply loved but theres no way to put it in

Yes you can. All you need is a will to spend money and find a creative sound shop.

Please keep us posted on this $2500.00 + project!

PS: If you are going to toss the old head unit, I'll PM you my address.

Just use a portable. Program it however you like. I have a portable that I carry in my briefcase when we go on flying trips. When we get where we are going it sits on the dash of the rental vehicle.

There are so many features about the navi that are superior, but, I'm afraid, the data base management of POI's is clearly not one of them. It's kind of a mixed bag.

For example, try to find the nearest "Walmart". You have to spell your request so that it exactly matches the entry in the data base. There is a difference between finding a "Walmart, Inc.", and just plain "Walmart". A Garmin or TomTom GPS will match partial spellings, so all you need to do is come close.

Saying that, I will admit that some searches are very easy and accurate. Say, "Find nearest Chinese restaurant.", and the returned list is always quick and very accurate. This type of search is much better than Garmin, etc.

With the exception of global searching, I do find, overall, the Acura navi clearly superior. However, the one thing I don't understand is Honda's decision to eliminate the touch screen feature in the latest navs. Simply, I would not consider a line of GPS navs that don't have this feature.

What were they thinking?!

They wanted to position the screen higher on the dash so that it would be closer to the driver's line-of-sight. Unfortunately, by doing so, it was positioned too far away for a touchscreen to be a viable means of programming it.

I have to say that I was a bit peeved at this decision, but in practice it's hard to find fault with their reasoning. Not only is the screen a quick read, but the jog-dial controller is intuitive and a joy to use. Case in point: I had no problems programming a side trip to Howe Caverns while en-route to Montreal this past summer (and yes, it was in the POI database). True, one shouldn't make a point of doing this while driving, but the fact of the matter is that it was a relatively simple procedure that required minimal attention away from the road. Regardless of one's opinion on the interface, you can't argue that Acura's decision not to lock out the navi's functions while in motion is their "killer app".

See the install of it i can do myself its just how the wiring would work is what gets me (ive been building show cars for 8 years). My problem is since everything is blended in together control wise it messes everything up.

Im not pitching a $2200 head unit thats for sure. If worse comes to worse ill put it in my other car. Id just rather have it in the car i drive most of the time.

Anybody got some info on how to install it and whats involved?

I agree with the poor POI search results. I love this Nav for other reasons, but the POI's are not one of them. I tried to find the Costco near me and there had to be 20 choices ranging from Costco to Costco Warehouse to Costco Automotive to Costco HQ to Costco Pharmacy, etc. It just wouldn't end. I must have gone through about 20 choices before I found the nearest Costco. It was way too long to find it!

So then I take my truck out a week later (it has an Eclipse navigation system) and try to find Costco. Bam, first result was the one closes to me. It also showed other Costcos like the pharmacy and gas station, but it first listed the closest one. I did not have to choose a category in order to find if my costco was in there. Very poor design. For something that is supposed to help you, the POI search on the Acura Nav is frustrating.

Lexus uses an Eclipse navigation system. That is the same exact system I put in my truck and it also has that ding which is extremely helpful.

Here's another thought, since our navi is dvd based. Who is the manufacturer of it? Maybe they offer better cd's to other units that is compatible with ours? My problerm is the navi on the z2 is build into the HD so its not goin anywhere.

And same here with the old navi unit, i typed in anything and it came up right away first time.

I seem to have found a fix for finding "The nearest Costco" or "The nearest Starbucks" is by using the 'Keyword' function.

1) Find by Category (I.E. Restaurant)
2) Select "All Types"
3) Find place by "Keyword" (I.E. Starbucks)
4) Sort by "Distance" or "City Vicinity"

This way you don't need to be EXACT in your POI wording as you need to be when you try to find something merely "By Name"

This should be documented MUCH better or even better, Honda should actually render the "Find by name" function usable.

Excellent post! This will definitely help me. I tried it out and found my costco right at the top! It's a couple more steps than my Eclipse in the truck, but still, way better than before!

I am trying this tomorrow! We bought our vehicle in another city so used the nav the entire weekend and it drove me crazy trying to find stores, I kept getting all these U.S. locations first in my list (I'm in Canada)! Wal-Mart is in there with several different spellings (WalMart, Wal Mart, Wal-Mart....) and all those categories.....yikes, I almost cried it was so painful!

So, are you saying I can select "all types" as my category instead of choosing a specific category?

I too have found that the Navi sometimes does not want to find POI's. The POI database is quite good, in fact it is among the best for a factory Nav system.

But at times, it can be tough to search for places. The other day, we couldn't find a restaurant by one method, but could by searching for it another. Strange.

All right, I tried this today. It didn't work all that well for me. My first search was for keyword "Wal" in the shopping category, sort by vicinity. The results did show me the Wal-Mart right near me at the top of the list, and also listed a paint and WALlpaper store that is near me. So far, so good. But, the other 2 Wal-marts in my city were NOT in the list at all. It listed Wal-Marts that were in cities 1 hour away and 1.5 away, but not the other 2 Wal-Marts that are 10 minutes from me.

Then I tried searching for Costco. I got Costco's in cities 2.5, 5, 6.5 hour away from me and even further. My local Costco was nowhere in the list. Oddly, though, I can't find it when I search by name either, it's not in any of the categories provided in the search results. And this Costco has been around for at least 15 years, so it's not like it's new.

So, unfortunately, this isn't working too well for me.
