The Canadian Government as amended the law and has lifted the restrictions on all 2008 Acura's and Honda as of January 30, 2008.
The law originally called for electronic immobilizer meeting the Canadian Motor Vehicle Standard 114 on all vehicle made since September 1, 2007.
This as now been amended and they will permit after market immobilizer to be added.

I thought the biggest issue was Acura's policy of invalidating the warranty when purchasing across the border........... |

My understanding is that you have no warranty in Canada but the warranty would still apply in the USA.
Best regards

Yes, I should have said "not honoring the US warranty in Canada". |

Hi
I attempted to import and new 2008 MDX from the US but no Acura dealer in the USA would sell me one once I advised them that I was importing to Canada. I tried dealers from Ohio down to Florida and all had the same answer. The US Acura dealers have been told by Honda that they are not permitted to sell a new MDX to a Canadian and if they do they will lose their franchise. As well, even if you did get a USA Acura dealer to sell you one, Honda will not give you the recall notice letter which you need when bringing the vehichle across the border. The warranty was the least of my worries.
If anyone has better luck let me know. |

Would you be willing to compromise on "NEW"?
How about a demo or very low milleage used one?
I have heard rumours that this is the way they get around the rules at some car dealers now. |

| I was only looking for a brand new 2008 model. Yes you are correct if it is a demo or used one than what I stated above would not apply. |

Unfortunately the warranty situation is indeed true. Once an Acura is imported into Canada and registered there the warranty is voided. In fact, we're told that if a Canadian registered American Acura comes in for service that the warranty is still void :(
This also applies to Demonstrators. Basically, we are not allowed to sell ANY new Acuras to any country outside of the continental United States. It's not just Canada, we get inquiries from dealers and individuals from Eastern Europe on a regular basis as well, apparently the new MDX is quite the desirable vehicle in Russia, Belarus, Poland, etc.
In reality we won't lose our franchise, but if we get caught we face huge chargebacks and allocation penalties. It is also a violation of our dealer agreement, we're franchised to sell Acuras in America only.
Your best bet is to find a used 2007 or 2008 although the exporters are pushing the prices of those sky high on a wholesale level. |
