I am looking to buy a 2007 or newer MDX. I am also looking to tow a 3800 lb boat/trailer/gear.
Here is what I am looking for:
I know the MDX is rated to tow 5000 lbs.
Is that fully loaded or with only 1 passenger?
Can someone check out their owners manual and find out for me?
Does the manual spell out what you can tow with 1, 2, 3 etc passengers?
Thanks so much.
Anybody towing with the same type load I plan on towing?? If so...how does it handle it?? Thanks again. |

Additionally, the max tongue loads for the amount of passengers listed above is as follows (found on page 366 of the '08 manual):
2 - 500 lbs (227 kg)
3 - 470 lbs (213 kg)
4 - 370 lbs (168 kg)
5 - 275 lbs (125 kg)
6 - 150 lbs (68 kg)
- The corresponding weight limits assume occupants fill seats from the front of the vehicle to the back, each occupant weighs 150 lbs (70 kg), and each has 15 lbs (7 kg) of cargo in the cargo area. Any additional weight, including cargo or accessories, reduces the maximum trailer weight and maximum tongue load. Never exceed the gross axle weight ratings (see page 364).
- Recommended tongue load should be 5-15% of the total trailer weight for boat trailers, and 8-15% of the total trailer weight for all other trailers.
We'll be towing a trailer 3000# when fully loaded, so not quite as heavy as yours, but not until the summer. Thus, I can't give you any feedback yet. I do know that we had no issues towing this with our prior 3500# towing capacity vehicle, so I expect the MDX to have no issues as well. |

I have towed 2 snowmobiles on a dbl open trailer..probably only 2200lbs. The MDX tows fine. I won't be able to tow the boat until summer but usually the boat tows easier because it's not as wide as the snowmobile trailer even tho it is heavier.
3800lbs is a fairly decent weight and if you are towing regular you may want to consider a true 4X4. Not certian how the SH-AWD will handle heavy loads, may over heat in the summer who knows? |
