Personally, I am totally disappointed as I was expecting a more radical improvement, like on the MDX. On the outside, this looks just like a bloated Accord.
I actually like the current design better as it feels more elegant. |

| Well it is just a MMC and not a redesign. I'm not sure this will help sales at all. I do think the wheels look better than the current model's. |

wow it got the MDX engine! interesting. i think they should of added a 6 speed auto though...
and it looks way to similar to the new accord |

More pics. I think I need to reserve judgement on the wheels. In these pics, the wheels remind me of a TSX...

| I like the integrated traffic feature. I wish the current MDX had it. Its nice to be detoured around upcoming traffic like some of the portable navigation systems feature. |

| I hate the front grill, my prediction is they sell even less of these next year. |

| I agree and think this one is even less likely to sell. |

| Wow!!! They managed to make it even LESS attractive!! I think the "shield grille" is the new direction for Acura...a wrong one at that! On the MDX it's not so bad, but on the RL it is just way out of proportion! I give credit for some of the nifty new features though. Like others have said, they will probably sell even fewer vehicles. I wouldn't be surprised if the new Hyundai Genesis steals RL sales. |

I like the chiselled front but the grill does look like a half-a$$ed attempt at a bolder look, somewhat like a Caddy. The RL will likely sink until the actual 2010 redesign is out, hopefully bigger, with a 320 HP diesel, design cues from the NSX, and V8.
Till then, when the price drops, the RL will be an underrated sedan with all the bells and whistles at a good price. |

| Oops, Acura really needs to do better than this for their flagship.......... The front end may work on the MDX, but the proportions are all wrong for the car. |

| Why can't we have a V-8?! |
|
|
| bronxblaza117 |
| no need for a V8! the new RL and MDX have an engine that has V8 comparable power with the efficiency of a V6. |

| I am not diggin that at all. I am probably going to go to the auto show next week and check it out. |

From start to finish, it's butt ugly.
The front looks a combo from that of a TL and MDX.
I'm thinking of Infiniti EX35 crossover. |

I'm confused here -- not only did the previous RL have live traffic updates, so does the 2nd generation MDX. What the new RL has is live weather updates. Nice. [EDIT: Ah, I see what you mean now. The new system automatically re-routes you. Nifty. Pity it doesn't make up the exterior styling.]
But back to the topic at hand: The "new" RL. Acura really missed the boat with this one... What works on the MDX (read: big, shield-like grille) clearly doesn't in this application. Grille aside, the rest of the car looks like a bloated Accord (another vehicle that got hit one time too many with the ugly stick).

I was just mentioning to my wife the other day that I would have kept the traffic feature on if they did that... this is purely a software thing, no reason they can't update ours to do it... not that they will |

| Its just butt@$$ ugly. I don't know what these designer are thinking! The new Acuras are starting to look more and more disapproving to the eye.:trustme: |

well remember the same thing was said about the new CRV and the new MDX, look how well those turned out to be.
its not that they are ugly, they are different and are going to take some time getting used to. |

Yes, I particularly didn't care for the design of the new MDXs when I saw it. I'll retract half of my butt ugly comment. The rear of the car looks fairly decent but I stand ground on my original comment for the nose. At least the MDX grill, yet also ugly, is proportional with the rest of the SUV. |

Any price on the new RL? Did not find it on a brief search. It will sell if the price is low enough. Low enough that the TL owner will think the RL is a great value. Price is not low enough if RL fans have to go through contortions to convince skeptical viewers that RL is a great value.
Last year, the RL cost $10,000 + more than TL. Lower the price, RL will sell. Otherwise, nothing has changed. |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....for me both the MDX and new RL's front grill are fugly. |

they have said that its going to cost about the same as the current RL. i dont think lowering the price is going to solve the problem, plus the RL is supposed to be Acura's flagship vehicle, its gotta be the priciest one. They just just make it more worth it to buy it for the price, taking into account what competitors are offering and such. |

The design is just too rakish. Shouldn't be at this segment.
It should have elegant lines that expresses maturity and speed. |

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and personally I love the front end of the 2nd generation MDX; it makes a bold statement, and even if you hate it, you can't ignore it. IMO, the 1st generation X was bland to the point of invisibility (I never even noticed it, though it was staring back at me in pretty much every strip mall and soccer practice in suburbia). However, as cardingtr pointed out, for their flagship, Acura should've gone with flowing and elegant, not aggressive and in-your-face. I'm sure there was a way to accomplish this while still paying lip service to the shield-grille, which for better or worse, is Acura's new trademark styling cue going forward.
And while I don't think we've descended into BMW/Bangle territory yet, I'm not terribly optimistic regarding the upcoming Acura models. To wit, when I went to pick up my X from the stealer last week, I ribbed my service advisor a bit on the new RL and he commented that if I thought that was ugly, wait until I see the TSX...

I don't know... it seems that their latest designs are getting "americanized" in that they lack that Japanese or European touch that made the current TL/TSX/RL look so good.
Comparing this new TSX preview with the shots they've released for the new Euro Accord wagon (see below), all I can think of is that the Euro version is infinitely better looking.

I think the 'common design branding' (or whatever they call it) is killing these cars. A sheild grill in a oblong pentagon hole just doesn't work on every single Acura product. I'm sure the designers hate it too. Making both the front and rear bumpers come to a center point instead of a smooth contour doesn't work on EVERY Acura vehicle either. Besides, didn't Pontiac claim that as their common design brand already?
What's really sad is that even the concept cars on acura.com have the MDX grill. Imagine being a concept designer and being told to go nuts and draw whatever you want .... but make sure it has an MDX grill. What!!!!
Probably what offended me more than anything was many years ago when the Dodge Ram pickuptruck barn-door grill accidentally ended up becoming the icon for the whole Dodge brand. Next thing you know the folks responsible for the Dodge Viper had to integrate the pickuptruck grill into the Viper redesign. They pulled it off ok, but jeez. That's completly freakin rediculous!
Ahh ok, my rant is over.!! |
