Hi ALL:

I did not change transfer assembly fluid at 45K service.
Now I’m due for 60K service.
Question: When dealer replacing transmission (I have my transmission replaced at 44K), do they also changing transfer assembly and rear differential fluids? Is it necessary when changing transmission?
I pretty sure they will tell me that I need to do it as a part of my next service.

What year is your MDX?

More than likely, when you got your new Tranny, they filled it with fresh fluids (tranny fluid and transfer case fluid (of '03-'06)).

On '01-'02 models, the fluid in the transfer case is shared with the fluid in the tranny. Therefore when you change the Tranny fluid, both get refreshed.

On '03-'06 models, the tranny redesign separates these casings/reservoirs. The transfer case uses 90-10 gear oil versus tranny fluid. Therefore on a regular tranny fluid replacement, unless you specifically ask the dealer to change both, you will likely only have the tranny fluid changed. I don't think the gear oil needs changing as often as the Tranny fluid however.

Rear differential is another separate animal that takes VTM-4 fluid. Given this is a different component of the vehicle, this would not likely have been changed when you had a new tranny put in.

My MDX is 2003.

You think that transfer assembly fluid has not been changed during tranny replacement?

Thanks,

Probably changed with the replacement as it is technically part of the Transmission unit.

However for subsequent fluid changes, you will need to specifically ask for the gear oil to be replaced. It's about a $70 charge on top of the Tranny fluid change costs.
