My fog lights blew out again and I was wondering if I should get another HID kit like i have for my headlights...on my 05. I know the plastic can melt and it may not work, but i was wondering if anyone has tried.
The new MDXs have a nice color fog....and i am not sure what they use |

| I've been using a Xenon Depot HID on my 04 fog for the past 4 years. No problem with melting. |

One of the beauties of a true HID kit (ballasts, wiring, etc) is that they are much cooler to run. After the initial momentary start up surge, provided by the ballasts, they only require about 35 watts to run, with about 3 times the light output. Normal bulbs are about 55 to 65 watts. I noticed that the surface of the projector headlight assembly is much cooler to the touch. It's barely above ambient. Melting and overheating are not an issue. That's one of the reasons HIDs are speced for battery and hybrid vehicles: Lots of light, reduced electrical demand.
Be careful, as some suppliers sell "HID kits", which are merely a higher wattage bulb (PIAA and Hoen for example). Those bulbs (sold as xenon, the inert gas in the bulb and the HID capsule) are not a true HIDs. Install of higher wattage bulbs may have heat and melting problems, although are generally easier to install, as you simply swap bulbs. |

Do you use the same h11 bulbs in our fogs?? I did not regard that thread because i thought that it was comparing apples and oranges. |

The 2005 X uses 9006 fogs, H11 lows and 9005 highs. Morph made a nice how-to writeup on bulb replacement here.
I don't intend to replace my fogs with HIDs since I don't think it's worth it in my situation, but I did replace the lows with Polarion HIDs, highs and fogs with XenonMatch HOEN brand lamps on my 2001. |

I threw in a HID kit and the light output is wonderful. There is a huge difference in the light output as compared to the factory fog lights. I'd recommend them if you don't need them for driving in the fog.
I don't see a lot of fog where I live (maybe 2 days a year), so using them for the fog isn't an issue. The fogs are now much more useful to me than they were before. |
