OEM Front mask causing scratches on my hood... - Click HERE for Original Thread

I purchased an OEM front mask/bra for my MDX when I purchased the car, and when cleaning the car yesterday I noticed a bunch of small scratches on the hood. The only thing that could have caused this would be the mask. Has this happened to anyone else?

Please give me some feedback because next time I go to the dealer I am going to point it out. I always clean the mask and area before putting it on. I do it right, so this should not happen.

You just found out the dirty little secret to front end bras. Even though you may clean the surface before you install the mask, there is no way to keep very small dust particles from 'sandpapering' the finish of your finish. From what I've seen, they do a lot more damage than one is led to believe.

For my money, the clear bra plastic overlays are the way to go.

Rocks fall in between the bra and the car and cause minute scratches and other tidbits.

No matter how "careful" you are with those leather masks, this is going to happen. I don't think the dealer can/will do anything about your situation. I'd say just polish out the scratches to the clear coat and move on.

This is nothing unique to the MDX or any Acura mask for that matter. Besides, I'm sure there is a disclaimer on the instructions that it is not recommended for the mask to be left on at all times. I've used them in the past on other vehicles, but since they were all light colored, scratches weren't apparent. When I did see scratches, I just buffed them out. I've also used blue masking tape to protect the hood from the edges of the mask.

I have used it only twice, and I do not leave it on. That is what gets me. I would be more understanding if they said...."May scratch hood/bumper of car."

That's the thing. What is worse fine scratches that you can remove later with polish or deep gouges from rocks thrown up at the car.
