So, I've been changing my oil for the last two years in my '05 and following the owner's manual, which says that the crankcase capacity is 4.5 quarts. Last week, I was reading through the Acura Owner's Link page and it lists info about my vehicle. Under "Engine" it listed the crankcase capacity at 5.0 quarts! So, is this a "cut and paste" typo, created when someone took some info from a different Acura and pasted it in the default MDX capacities? What is the correct capacity? I'd say that the owner's manual is correct...
Thanks,

What does your dipstick show?
That should be all that matters.

| On my '02, I've always added 5 quarts when changing the oil and filter......but kims MDX has the best suggestion, check the dipstick. |

Good point. Whenever I check my dip stick, it always reads fine, so I guess the owner's manual trumps here.

I don't have an MDX manual in front of me at the moment, but many manufacturers will list a crankcase capacity and a separate oil filter capacity. Not sure why they list it that way. Since the MDX oil filter hangs upside down it will still be full of oil when you drain the crankcase. I guess if for some reason you change the oil but not the filter maybe 4.5 quarts will read as full. If you replace the filter you'll need that extra 0.5 quart to fill it up.
So the crankcase may be 4.5 quarts, but you'll need 5 quarts if you change the oil and filter.
But ya, it's unusual for two official publications to list it differantly. |

| As far I can see, it really doesn't matter. 0.5 quarter of oil really doesn't change the oil level that much. If you are lazy, just pour 5 qt, it won't harm the engine in any way. |

Last thread I remember on this was 4.5 in the crankcase and then another .3 if your changing the filter (the new small ones...the older filters were larger-.5qts)
So usually that means 4.8 qts. I always fill with 5 qts that puts me a tad over ful on the dipstick, but not enough to think twice about. |

I always round to the nearest quart on any engine I do. Half quart high won't hurt, and half quart low just means you start out mid-way on the dipstick. Shouldn't be an issue unless the engine consumes oil like a mofo.
I can't deal with half empty bottles of oil. Can't tell if it's new or old oil. |

So, I gave Acura a call and spoke to a very nice young lady who basically didn't know. After being on hold for a couple of minutes, she came back and said that "we suggest you follow the owner's manual." I think that in the future, I'll just dump in 5 quarts. I change the filter every time so it's probably closer to 5 quarts than 4.5 needed.
Thanks,

The 4.5 figure is correct.
If you will drain all oil and change the filter you will need to replace with 4.5 qts. of oil. Do that and then check the indicated dipstick level. It should be very close to the full mark.
Owners manuals do not list capacity as just that for oil and not include filter.
Are you going to hurt anything by over filling with 5 quart? The only thing will be your pocket book. |

If you want to get technical, 4.6 is the correct amount. As for the discrepancy between the owner's manual and online, make sure you're not confusing imperial and US quarts. Both are usually listed, and it's 1.2 US quarts for every 1 imperial quart.
I do 4.5 quarts just because it's easier that way to use the 1/2 quart for one change and then use the other half for the next change. |
