It's been colder than all blazes here in MN and it got me to thinking about features that Acura could add when they refresh the MDX in 09 or 10.
Here is my starting list. I'll be happy to compile other ideas.
1. Heated Steering Wheel - really miss this from my X5
2. Better heater seat controls, more levels and faster warm up
3. Rain sensing wipers - not sure how they missed this
4. Full iPod integration
5. Option to purchase without third row of seats, moving spare tire inside.
6. Add the compass back to the auto rearview mirror
7. Improved initial torque out of the V6
8. Diesel option - discussed her before
9. Panoramic sunroof option
10. Option for heated rear seats
I know, enough with the heated whatever comments. Sorry, it's cold here! |

I agree, Acura has some really go places to go when refreshing the MDX. But for #10, I especially agree. You should not be restrained to the entertainment package for the heated rear seats. I think they should come standard if you get an MDX with nav along with the power Tailgate, only the Base ones should have the option to get them.
As for 5, I think thats pushing it a bit to far. I think they should revise the 3rd row to make more legroom, and to make all the seats in the rear fold flat. |

USB port on head unit, would love to have my MP3's read from a 16GB stick.
Outside temp visible all the time...can't see it on the trip computer screen.
Stand alone compass on Elite.
+1 on heated steering wheel.
Ambient lighting for second + 3rd rows.
HID fog lights.
Variable cylinder management.
Active damper suspension system that doesn't knock over potholes. |

Good list, hipcheck. The only thing I would add to this would be cooled seats. I'm sure you would've come around to them, but you were too focused on the "heated" side of the equation. ;)
With the exception of #'s 5, 7, 8 and 9, all of these are eminently possible without a major refresh. And I agree that the heated rear seats should be a standalone option, along with the power tailgate (actually the tailgate should be standard).

I would also add keyless go.
I had this on my Mercedes, am thankful it's on the Lexus I replaced the MB with.
PS: My MDX rear seats are heated. They came that way without an option. Yours are not?

Actually they did. When you ordered the Entertainment package you also ordered heated rear seats, whether you wanted them or not. What we're saying is that they should be a standalone option, as opposed to being bundled with the Entertainment package. Of course, this is one of the ways that Acura keeps costs down, since it reduces the number of possible configurations from the factory.

1. Screen that displays outside temperature, mpg, remaining driving range at the same time.
2. GPS address book that can be shared by both keys.
3. GPS that has a funtion that can suspend/resume your current routing.
4. Second row seats that can be moved forward to creat more leg room for the third row seat.
5. Higher grade interior materials and some REAL wood.
6. Thicker steering wheel
7. Make the keys smaller, with the metal key extended out, it's really big.
8. Better stereo. I am not impressed by the ELS one bit, yes, I have the prologic off and the rear speakers on, and tried different settings too. |

Here are mine to add to your list:
11. Improve 2nd and 3rd row leg room
12. Put an AUX input jack back in the console for ENT pkg, and move A/C jack to 2nd row.
13. More balanced weight distribution with tighter handling
14. 19" standard tires/wheels
15. Standard power lift gate (currently only available with ENT pkg)
16. Rear bumper sill cover
17. Better brake feel (i.e. less "squirrely")
18. Tighter gaps interior/exterior
19. Reduce windnoise
20. Redesign headlights with LED DRL's (like newer Audi's)
21. Brushed Aluminum-finish luggage racks as option to match sport running boards |

1. Keyless entry and a start button activated with a small module like BMW has.
2. USB input to the car for phone number inputs, music, a picture slde show, home movies that would show on the navi screen.
3. Access to real time weather radar for the Navi Screen. I know they have tried several methods of doing this, but none have been added.
4. Air Conditioned Seats- Its HOT in Florida...
5. Hybird Engine with Batteries and Hydrogen Fuel
6. Auto rear tail gate open and close without having to buy the DVD System.
And many of the items listed above. |

Six things that would make me very grateful to Acura:
1. Use real wood or brushed aluminum inside
2. Power lift gate for all models
3. More driver legroom
4. Front and rear parking sensors for all models
5. Incorporate Honda's VCM
6. Ease up a bit on the overdone gladiatorial grill.

Many of these have already been mentioned:
1. Real wood trim (as an option, at least)
2. Hill descent control (does the new one have it? I don't know...)
3. A more understated dash (too busy, too blingy)
4. Blacked out or toned down grille
5. A cool color option like a pale green or something
6. Working iPod interface!
7. Clear taillight lenses
8. Quieter ride (still too noisy) |

Yeah, that and the S-Type would be nice.
To the person who posted about better handling, if you want better handling, buy a porsche, that is probably the only SUV I have ever driven that handles better. |

So, what would make me trade in my '07 for a '09 or '10:
1. Rain-sensing wipers - had them on my '04, and really miss them
2. A good IPOD hookup or USB port on the dash
3. Really flat fold rear seats
4. Many of the other items previously mentioned
5. Permission from my wife. |

My 08 X's Nav says local street names too. I was surprised.
The navigation's turns list should start from the bottom, not the top. It feels odd that the traveling arrow points up but you have to read the turn list in an opposite direction. |

Debatable, at least when comparing it to an MDX with the Sport package. I've driven a current X5 (with BMW's version of the sport package) pretty hard, and in all honesty I couldn't give it an edge in the handling department (or interior department, for that matter). Between the active dampers and the SH-AWD selectively applying torque to the rear wheels, the MDX is lighter on its feet than it ought to be, and it corners like it's on rails. Literally.
Mind you, this may very well tip decisively in the X5's favor with the debut of their new xDrive, which operates suspiciously like a rear-wheel biased SH-AWD. In the meantime, however, I've gotta say that I'm thoroughly impressed with how my X handles. As for those cooled seats and iPod adapter (the only changes that I really want to see), I guess I'll just have to wait...
Regards,
Adam
PS - Yes, paddle-shifters would be nice. Perhaps they could toss that into future Sport packaged vehicles (along with some "Sport" badges, maybe a suspension control button on the steering wheel, and an indicator on the IP telling you which mode you're currently in). |

I wonder if that was in the recent DVD update. Does your's have a choice of male or female voice? I have the 07 DVD with options for male or female, but no road names.
Have you tried flipping the point of reference? I think you can change how the map is displayed and responds to your traveling. Not sure if that will help though. |

I have a reserved spot in my garage in the city, but the spot next to me is a "floater" (i.e. the garage attendants park cars there at their discretion). As such, I always fold my passenger-side mirror in when I leave my X just to be on the safe side. Since there's a lot of room between me and the next car over on the driver's side, I don't have to fold that mirror in, but even so I've taken to folding it in as a reminder to unfold the passenger-side mirror. I've pulled out a couple of times without doing so, and it's a right pain in the arse to have to pull over on the street a couple of blocks later, get out, unfold it, get back in and drive off.

MDX88 is right; the grille comes across as just another "edgy" attempt by Japanese carmakers to grab attention, witness the Murano/FX design when it first appeared.
The understated classiness of the BMW and Land Rover designs do much more for me from an aesthetic perspective than all the other bling that's out there these days, and that includes the new MDX. |

Hmmm... The moment I saw the MD-X concept I knew that I had found my next car, and the shield-grille was a big part of the appeal. Heck, knowing that it would be a polarizing stylistic cue made it just that much better.
As for the new, ever-so-slightly Bangle-ized X5, it does absolutely nothing for me from an aesthetic standpoint (I liked the previous generation better), whereas the Rovers are slab-sided exercises in playing it safe, IMO.
Vive la difference, I say.
PS - I also love the FX, and would've considered one if there was more interior space and cargo room. |
|
|
| BostonX |
I still hold forth that the new (and old) X5 and Range Rover (more so than the LR3 or even Sport) are the best looking vehicles of their type on the market right now. What's unusual, I will admit, is how the once ugly (IMO) FX now looks attractive and contemporary. Maybe the designers knew something we didn't...
That said, a daring and medievally-important grille doesn't a great car design make. |

Hey, so long as it's clear that opinions are being expressed as just that, it's all good.
And no, a grille does not a car make, but when taken with the whole, the MDX makes a refreshingly different statement in a suburban landscape populated by look-alikes. IMO, naturally.
Regards,
Adam
PS - And I certainly won't deny that the Range Rover is a handsome vehicle. The X5 still does nothing for me. Toss a 4.8 into the mix, however, and I'll sing whatever tune you want me to... |

I am quite partial to the grill as well.
Regarding the range rover, it looks decent from certain angles, but overall it seems somewhat uninspired to me. There's nothing about it that seems mildly exciting when you look at it. Nothing that makes you say, I can't wait to drive it...but that's just my opinion.
The BMW on the other hand, has got some style. Although, I guess I'm more a fan of the sedans or coupes than the SUV. The 745 or whatever number it's up to now is a straight up perfect balance between muscle, luxury and sport.
That 645 however, looks even better IMO if you've ever seen one in person. I know nothing of it's prowess on the road, but for straight visuals, that is one tight looking car. |

I would like to see a factory built in built in Solar Powered Air Circulator that would have a small solor powered fan to remove hot air in the inside top of the car and exhaust out by pulling cooler air in thru the lower dash board. This would prevent the car from being 130 degrees when sitting in the sun all day. It would operate like the ones you can now buy and clip on the windows. These make noise when driving and do not work with the tined glass that stops the sun from powering the solar panel.
Add air-conditioned seats and the MDX would be the coolest car around. |

KEEP the shield grille. I like it.
Here's my wish list, there's more but that would make it a fantasy list:
1. A better integrated address book/phone list that is easier to use and set up
2. Auto folding side view mirrors
3. Auto adjusting rear view mirror linked to the keys (don't care much for auto-dimming)
4. Some more differentiation for the sport model - how about auto ride height adjustment suspension at highway speeds in the sport mode?
5. COOLED SEATS all around except 3rd row PLEEEEEEASE
6. Proximity sensors for both front and rear OR how about the new all view cameras (like the Infinit EX 35) with park assist
7. Access to the third row from both sides
8. Better RES LCD resolution
9. Propagate the perforated matel looking plastic currently used in the sport model around the radio/shifter to the plain jane grey plastic on all the inside doors, combine with chrome inside door levers
10. Real wood instead of plood
KS |

|

Now that I've had the car for a while I too have come up with some things I would like to see.
Real wood. A $40K+ car should not have fake wood in it.
Thicker steering wheel. I would like to see the wheel be as tick all around as the two sections at 10 & 2 oclock.
Better button placement on the steering wheel. More buttons on steering wheel.
I'd like to be able to turn the radio and an off from the sterring wheel. I would also like the HFL and Voice command buttons moved up closer to the radio buttons. My old car had a few buttons on the back of the wheel that were easily reached when in my preferred 9&3 hand position. I would like to have that again.
Better voice recognition for the HFL. I can't make an entry for Steve because it the system thinks it sounds too much like 8 or 3. ????
I'd like to have a touch screen NAV. The
single knob function is annoying when entering an address. I would also like to see the basic turn info displayed in the MID. I recently drove an Audi that did this and I really liked that feature.
I'd like to see a power outlet in the center console by the AUX input. I can't see how they missed this one.
iPod suppor that actually worked would be nice. My prior Chrysler had what at best would be described as a mediocre radio, so the ESL radion in the MDX sounds pretty good to me.
Other have asked for new power plants or more power. I would just like to see the car lose a few hundred pounds. That would give the benefits of better acceleration, better barking and better gas mileage. All positives and no negatives.
Self folding mirrors would be a nice.
DRL's that can be turned off.
Suspension that can be adjusted up and down. When I put the car in Sport mode the suspension should drop an inch or two. It would also be nice if when you park the car it would drop a couple of inches to make getting in and out a bit easier for the young and old.
Better panel fit. I can't believe how poorly the fuel filler door fits. On my car the door is not centered in it's opening and the top of the door sticks out quite a bit.
That's all I can think off at the moment. |
|

Personally ...
-- Heated seats, power lift-gate w/o having to get Rear DVD
-- Rain-sensitive wipers (miss these from my Lexus RX)
-- hybrid option
-- lower engine output (compression ratio), so it doesn't require premium fuel ... I don't need 300 hp (marketing tool)
-- a more sensible MID (where you can monitor MPG, temp, etc)
-- improved back-up camera time from start
-- a way to go with aluminum trim and NO wood trim |
|
|
| MDX4now |
Seems so silly that from 2003-2006 rain sensing wipers were standard on the Touring models on up.
Blatant cost cutting like that puts a bad taste in my mouth.
Oh well, maybe they'll add them back in when they refresh in 2010 and pass them off as a "new luxury addition for '10...that once were standard 7 years ago" |

MORE buttons on the wheel? you're serious? :2:
I agree with you on the placement, though. They are cumbersome to use. |

Yes. But smarter layout. You could replace one big bulky up/down button with a roller. Then also make the roller a push button and now you have all your functionality in 1/3 the space. With two of these you end up with more buttons in less space. |

more personality HFL/NAV, the one talk don't take sh$t from you. The one that will whip your ass for being a smart ass by asking senseless question/demand.
Example:
1. Q. How long until destination?
1. A. What? are you stupid, you can't figure that out in your little head?
2. Q. Where's the nearest gas station?
2. A. Dude, you've just passed 3 of them.
3. Q. Radio... FM. 100...
3. A. Get your lazy ass up & push the damn button yourself, I ain't your slave.
.... That sort of thing. :2: |

I was wondering when some one was going to question that... maybe we could get 10-20 more on there... we could get rid of that pesky air bag and put them right across the middle :) |

That's super easy. Just don't push the buttons on the wheel and ask your SO. I'm sure those are the answers my SO would give.

Don't know if it's been said already but my altima had it and I liked it ...
Removeable front cup holders !!!! :)
You can pop out the holder section and wash it etc. when I go to drive up food places and they overfill the soda etc. it spills in there sometimes and I have to strain my fingers to get it clean where as in the alti I just poped it out and washed it under the tap, let it drain and back into the car... it's the little things :p |

Some really good ideas so far. I think Acura really needs to add these options:
1. Cooled seat
3. Better heated seats (doesn't heat up enough). Passenger seat should have heated back like the driver.....WTF was Acura thinking. My old 2005 Chevy Trailblazer had that???????
2. Keyless entry/start (like my RL, which I love no matter what all the Lexus, Mercedes and BMW HATERS say)
3. Roof rack and power lift-gate should be standard too
4. Better access to third row (like on the new Buick Enclave, which is REALLY nice....if it had better features, I would be all over it).
5. Power folding side mirrors
6. Phone book intergration option on blue-tooth should work with more cell phones other than SONY's!!!!!!!!!!!
7. I hope they add the new XM radio w/ XM nav auto re-route and weather up-dates. They should because the new TSX has these fetures.
8. XM should have a one-year plan on new cars, not three months.
9. I agree that 19" rims should come standard, with 20" options.
Just some of my improvement ideas. It feels like Acura is taking lots of short-cuts w the MDX and RL too. Hopefully, Acura will model the 2009 MDX after the new RL. I really like the new interior of the RL. The MDX should be more set apart from the RDX in terms of features. Other than size, I don't feel it is! |

| I agree with most of ideas, especially larger rims standard. ALSO, for any rim at all, please, please have better tires. |

here's my very early x'mas wishlist:
1. standard automatic door unlock and push button start system
2. standard folding outside mirrors - had them in my touareg and really, really miss them, especially in drive throughs and tight parking spots
3. better leather for the seats.
4. 2nd row seats that slide forward on both sides for easier access to the third row.
4. built-in sunshade for the second row windows - again, really missed from the touareg.
5. touch screen nav that can actually find me a place in new jersey. oh, and while they're at it, one that gives me the option to still use highways and doesn't necessarily make me take backroads to cut across america diagonally if i wanted the direct route.
6. about ten more inches in the back so i can put something there if i put both third row seats up.
7. pneumatic tailgate with split opening rear glass.
8. driver's lockout that retains the ability to open/close the other windows.
9. back up camera that doesn't take seven seconds to come on and tells your present heading and your trajectory based on the angle of your front wheel.
10. sound system that sounds as good in the front as it does in the second row - seriously, guys, imho, it does sound a whole lot different in the back seat. try it.
11. a less busy console, or at least a better way to differentiate one button from another. self explanatory.
12. better light sensing auto on/off headlights.
13. a handsfree link system that actually understands what i say.
a partridge and a pear tree... |

Just 5 requests fr me:
1. 12" LCD instead of the current 9" (RES). Some complains fr my 2 spoiled girls.
2. Available external video input (VGA, S-Video, RCA) for my mac mini, camera...
3. Cooled seats (front 2 is fine)
4. Folding side mirrors
5. Start/Stop switch.
Let me see. Add those 5 features, the price would be jacked up to an additional 3Gs. Worth it? Hell no. Would I pay for the extra 3Gs for it? May be. |

I'm only using this list as an example, but seriously folks, if even half of what you're "wishing" for is added, then you're talking about another $10K -- and that's on top of a Sport/Ent. Heck, if you option up an X5 3.0 with all of BMW's gadgets you're kissing $70K.
Reasonably, I'd like (and pay for) the following:
1. Power folding mirrors
2. Panoramic sunroof optional
3. Blind spot warning system
4. Cooled seats
Regards,
Adam
PS - Hey Rahul, the MDX already stops shorter than than most German SUVs (ML, X5, Q7, Toureg), save for the Cayenne, so bigger rotors would just make it stop shorter yet; and thanks to its ACE body structure and active head restrains, it has the highest crash test ratings of any SUV (including Volvo and Mercedes-Benz). |

Diesel hybrid so that I can drive it everyday to work instead of just parking it in my garage most of the time.
Come July gas is predicted at $150/barrel and that will really hurt. |
