It has been raining freezing ice today, so I turned the car on to warm up and also defrost the windows.
So I'm outside slowly chipping away the frozen ice around the car for about 10minutes.
Once I get inside I notice the rpms are jumping up from 1k to 2k? Odd, i pressed the gas and it went away. I go to the gas station to put tire in the tires, haven't driven the car for about 2weeks.
I noticed after a couple of miles down the road, when i let off the gas I can feel a vibration under the car.. but I thought it was the almost flat tire just hitting bumps.
When I just hold the gas, I feel no vibrations at all. I pull into the gas station and notice the rpms are jumping around again. WTF! I shut off the car immediately.
I wait a couple minutes, pretty worried, so I decide I must take the car home, its about 3 miles down the road.. while im driving i stop at a light and the check engine light turns on and the VTM4 light turns on too!!
Whats going on with my car? Bad tranny? im pretty worried |

| It sounds a lot like a vacuum leak; check the engine bay for any loose or disconnected hoses. The CEL + VTM-4 light was a common indication of problems with the EGR system, but I also got that combination for a misfire. |

If a mis-fire, I'd bet bad gas as the problem. With the cold temps and the extra ethanol in the fuel, fuel retains water and the octane goes down. I would suggest that you check the vacuum lines as stated above and also add a can of seafoam to your gas. You can buy it at your local autozone. |

I just went through this exact same issue. It was the Idle Air Control Valve in my case. Easy swap and the part was $160 from the local dealer but can be had online for around $115 plus shipping.
I tried to clean it first with carb cleaner as others have successfully done but I had no luck.
After replacing the part the MDX just flat out runs better, idles smoother and we see a marked improvement on the trip computers reported MPG. Also noticed that there are no more hard down shifts or thuds when driving in D5 around 45mph and taking the foot off the accelerator.
In any case, it idles like a dream now! Thought I would pass this along. Good luck! |
