Does anyone know exactly what type of "clay" that's in those detailing kits? I just need more clay, and not any more detailing spray and wax that comes with the tiny piece of clay they sell you. I was thinking that I could buy a hunk of it at a craft store.

It's not just regular clay!

You can buy Clay Magic kits @ Auto Zone. They include just the lube.

If you want to purchase a clay bar alone , then you need to order on-line.

Check out Ranney @ Pak Shak....http://store.pakshak.com/
He may be local for you!

The only good Zaino products are their sealants and QD sprays. There are far better polishes and compounds, leather conditioners, rubber and tire protectants, etc. out there.

Due to the patent on detailing clay, there are only two mfgrs making clay for all of the companies that sell detailing clay. Zaino isn't any better than the others, it's exactly the same. Also, it only comes in one grade, which makes it only useful for novice detailers.

I think the leather cleaner and tire protectant is very subjective based on how glossy you like your tires and what you like as the smell of your leather cleaner. I wouldn't say that others are better just different looks and smells.

Hardly.

There are plenty of differences that can be measured objectively that make one product better than another. For instance, for tire protectants you can measure:

1) Resistance to sling-off
2) Longevity
3) Resistance to dirt (browning)

and that's not even getting into measures of how they protect against UV and oxidation.

Not to get in a battle, since I have no idea what you are comparing it to but I would say Zaino is one of the top rated for all three categories you listed when it comes to there tire protectant.

I will say it is more expensive but I think it is worth it.

What are some of the other products you feel are superior to the Zaino products?

Is there a particular brand or line in general, or one mfr. for leather, one for tire...etc?

I've recently tried Zaino, and while the weather was good, it definitely seemed to do what I wanted. It will be interesting to see what it looks like when the weather gets warm enough to give it a proper cleaning.

The 2008 portion of winter has been a bit rough. The roads all over Chicagoland are just in terrible condition from all the salt and snow plow trucks.

I guess I'll be happy with the protectant aspect if I don't have too many/any scratches swirls, dullness of paint or whatever.

Bottom line, would be interested in your thoughts on what products are superior, based on some of these objective measures.

Those were measures just for tire protectants, in case that wasn't obvious.

Nothing is more annoying than Zaino fanboys extolling the virtues of their products when their total sum experience consists of wiping on a couple coats of Z-2 Pro onto their car. If you're not a regular user of a rotary buffer (not an orbital like PC 7424), you probably don't have any information or experience worth sharing IMHO.

Here is what I happen to like at the moment:

Buffer Pads: Lake Country CCS
Rotary Buffer: Makita or Hitachi
Clay: Pinnacle, Blackfire
Compounds: Optimium, Hi-Temp
Polishes: Menzerna, Optimum
Sealants: Zaino, Blackfire, Wolfgang
Glaze: Klearkote
All-in-One: Zaino
Spray Sealants: Zaino, Optimum
Quick Detail Sprays: Zaino, Poorboys
Carnauba Wax: Pinnacle, Blackfire, Poorboys
Car Wash: Optimum, Meguiars
Tire Protectants: Blackfire, Pinnacle
Plastic Protectants: 303 Aerospace
Leather Cleaner: Lexol, Leatherique, 4-star
Leather Protectant: Lexol, Leatherique, 4-star

You don't have to be a professional detailer or a rotary buffer user to see that Zaino tire protectant and leather cleaner/conditioner are great products.

I say it is subjective because when you are comparing top of the line products the difference is usually what someone likes to use more because of looks and smell.

For someone who wants to get into detailing and keep there car clean and get everything at one stop the Zaino line is excellent.

The one Zaino product that I would recommend you avoid is their Z-PC polish. It totaly sucks compared to Menzerna or Optimum, but your average weekend car-washer will never polish their car so it's probably irrelevant to most. To a person who actually details their car it is relevant.

Thanks for the reply jhue!

I guess overall at the moment I am satisfied with the Zaino products, but when the current supply runs out, it will be nice to have some options.

The one product that I was not at all satisfied with is there tire protectant. It doesn't seem to last long at all, and even with multiple coats, it doesn't really shine them up much. On the plus side, its sling factor is pretty low. The labeling says it is good for other exterior things such as plastic trim. Maybe I'll stick to using it for that, and try the Blackfire or Pinnacle you recommend.

Is the sling off minimal on these products? How are they applied, spray on and leave or are they gels/liquids that you wipe on?

Both Blackfire and Pinnacle are gels. I apply them with a tire wipe.

These are the three tire dressings I have in my kit right now:

Satin: Detailers Pride
Semi-Gloss: Blackfire
Gloss: Pinnacle

Oddly enough, the DP is advertised as "gloss", and the Pinnacle as "satin semi-gloss", but in my experience, DP is satin finish and Pinnacle is glossy.

The DP tire gel slings even after a day. The Blackfire and Pinnacle don't sling if allowed to dry for a few hours. Or if you're in a hurry, you can wipe them down after they've dried for a while, but it will reduce the gloss.

Thanks again! If it ever warms up again. I'll give those a try.
