Hi guys.
Yes, I've been reading all the other posts about tire and rim sizes, but I have a question that no one has addressed.
We have access to some ranch land that gets muddy and rutted out. I took my MDX out there a few weeks ago and got good and dirty, but was uneasy about tire traction.
(BTW, that VTM-4 button works great!)
I wanna upgrade the tires to something with more aggressive tread for next time so I'm not slipping everywhere.
Thinking about:
245/65 (or 255/65) R17
Pirelli Scorpions?, Goodyear Fortera TT?, Bridgstone Dueler A/T?
(I had those Dueler A/T's on my 96 Trooper and they were excellent all-around)
Anyone wanna chime in?
Thanks... |

Wow. After all those views, no one has an opinion?
Y'all could at least post something like "I don't know- I've never gotten my MDX dirty" or "You shouldn't use mud tires because..." or "I've only taken mine on snow" or "I had those __ tires and they sucked because..."
Sorry about the rant- just feel like an island over here. |

Ok, I'll bite:
"I don't know - I've never gotten my MDX dirty".
But seriously, the furthest off-road I've gone is the gravel driveway at my countryhouse, so any advice I could give you would be suspect at best. Even so, here goes: check out the reviews at TireRack.com and go by what you find there. FWIW, I've heard good things about the Scorpions with respect to winter traction, but I don't know how that would translate in terms of mudding.
Regards,

Thanks for posting, Craniotes. "Never got dirty"- very funny.:D
I have checked on tirerack and I'm now leaning toward Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo- probably 255/65 R17.
Various sites have numerous raves about their capability while still staying quiet on the highway.
Anyone else have thoughts? Has anyone ever gotten their MDX dirty? :p
What do y'all think about size? I'm gonna go wider and taller... |

most people with mdxs don't get them dirty but i have nothing like doing donuts in a random field
probably only mdx owner to do so and man it was fun
i have attempted to go off roading but did not turn out to good (it is not the best off-roading car)
sorry i have no ideas about tires but it would be cool to put them on |

ok, I'll go. I have Pirelli Scorpion AT tires on my 04 Jeep Wrangler. They have a big blocky tread design that looks great on the Jeep. Plus they have little white Scorpion icons on the sidewall which look cool right? I think they look cool! They have raised white lettering on the sidewall, which again, looks cool on my Jeep. My Jeep has gone deep rut mudding and sloppy wet mudding numerous times without getting stuck.
All that said, I don't think the ATs would look good on an MDX. Some of the other Scorpion models (ATR or STR) or other brands would look better on an MDX. Pirelli's probably are not the best option for long term tread wear.
If you take your MDX into questionable terrain, make sure you know in advance where your tow hooks are located and have a capable tow strap in your possession. If you get stuck you might find someone to help pull you out but odds are they wont have tow straps on them and they definately will not want to crawl around in the mud looking for your tow hooks (the person who is stuck has to do that job)! |

| Over on one of the Jeep forums I frequent, they really like Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos on Grand Cherokees. |

Thanks for posting guys.
Yep, when I was out on the ranch, there was a lot of sliding on the sticky, muddy rutted road. I'm not gonna be doing anything silly in my X, just trying to get down the road to the house without sliding everywhere.
Still liking the look if the Dueler A/T revo, but saw some Yokohama Geolander A/T-S on a 4runner the other day that looked sweet.
Anyone else have input? |

Bought em!
Yokohama Geolander AT-S 255/65 R17
Interestingly, I played the pricing game with Discount and NTB.
Ended up with 30% lower price than where the bidding started! Woo Hoo!
They look awesome! They fill the wheel wells nicely, but don't bulge out beyond the side molding, and still leave room for wheel travel.
They are about the same noise level on hwy as the Crossterrains.
X sits almost an inch taller and looks solid and substantial from the rear.
Cornering still tight. Does not wallow.
Slightly more noise on rough neighborhood roads, but I like it. If I wanted to drive a marshmallow, I'd have bought a Lexus.
Very happy with them!!:D |

Oops.
Forgot to mention: Next step is to remove those useless side steps. The collect mud and debris, get in the way, and only serve to get my pant leg dirty when I step out.
Since they're aluminum, they're not gonna do any good in an accident, or if I'm rockcrawling. Just kidding.:p |
