I didn't see anyone else referencing anything like this.
Earlier this morning, my wife was driving on the freeway and the driver side, side (the one in the seat), airbag deployed for no reason. Thankfully, traffic was slow at the time and she's fine and was able to exit the freeway and get her senses together.
Our MDX has never been in an accident. She didn't hit anything and nothing had hit the car. I've heard that big pot holes can possibly trigger a deployment, but the stretch of freeway she was on had recently been repaved, so there were no pot holes.
The car is at the dealer now getting checked out.
I'm stumped at what could trigger the side airbag to suddenly deploy. I'll take any theories or speculation on this.
The other concern is, of course, who's gonna pay for this? I think Acura should foot the bill, since one of the safety systems malfunctioned. The initial word I got was that the car is out of warranty, but aren't safty systems covered by more then just the standard mfg warranty? The service manager said seatbelts are covered lifetime, but he wasn't sure about airbags.
Anyways, if you've read this far, thanks. I know it really doesn't go anywhere, but just wanted to know if anyone else had this happened and/or just wanted to hear your feedback.

| Contact Acura corporate offices directly. I would think they'd want to keep you happy so they can send out a team to figure out what the heck happened. This is a HUGE safety issue as, if your wife had been leaning over the front seat looking in the center console as this had happened, she could have been killed by the blast. |

I agree that Acura should pick up the tab.
The only thing that I have seen that was even remotely similar, but not exactly, was with a company Taurus a co-worker had a few years ago.
She it a curb and a mailbox, bending the right front tire, she then hit a large rut further damaging the right front wheel. When she hit the last rut, the passenger side seat airbag deployed. |
