| Hi, I just purchased a 2001 MDX touring, private sale (124000 km). I have owned it for a week and on Friday morning past I put it in gear (d5) but it would not move (it appeared to be in neutral)and the vtm light came on. I shifted down into first gear and the transmission engaged and then I shifted into d5 and everything was fine. It did the same thing this morning. Does anyone have any idea what is happening. The person I bought it from said the transmission was replaced in December 2007. I was excited about the purchase at first, but now my excitment is dwindling.......thanks |

| Find out who the dealer was that replaced the transmission and have them check it out ASAP. |

Wait,
Are you saying that the VTM-4 Light goes out when you put it in D5? If so, that's normal.
The VTM-4 Lock only works in Reverse, 1st and 2nd. |

| There should still be a warranty on the transmission. Take it back to the dealership that did the work and at least get it on record that a problem exists. Even if they give you the standard "can not duplicate" response, you still have proof of when the problem started (in the warranty period) and can escalate to Honda corporate if needed. |

Thanks for response, just to clarify....first thing in the morning, when I put the gear shift in D5, the vtm light comes on but the transmission does on engage.....after I downshift to 1st the transmission engages and then i can shift it back to d5 and drive normally.....
The one thing I forgot to mention is one of the tires was on ice, would this cause the vtm to recognize I may need more traction and require me to downshift????
thanks |

Ahhhh OK.
That's not normal, sounds like it's possibly a software issue. Is there a dealer close by? |

I do live near a dealer so I will bring it in. I called today and they indicated that they would need to check the codes, to find out what the problem is. I asked the dealer what the warranty period was and he said there was no warranty on the transmission because it was a remanufactured transmission and it was replaced under Honda's "goodwill" clause. Has anyone heard of or experienced this scenario....
Appreciate your time in answering my questions..... |

That's BS - even a remanufactured transmission should have few months warranty. |

| Have you checked the fluid level? |
|

No,I haven't checked the fluid level, I will tomorrow.
I would think if the fluid was low it would happen all the time.....excuse my ignorance, but how would the fluid level cause this to happen, if it turns out to be the cause.....Thanks |

| Hi, just a follow up to my transmission problems. I spoke with the person I bought it from and explained the problem. He must have connections with the dealer because the dealer called me and said they would replace the transmisson (goodwill) but I would have to pay for labour. I guess this is the best I could hope for.....Thanks for all who replied..... |
