| The oil filter torque will be manufacturer specific based on gasket thickness and material. Usually it ranges from 1/4 turn after contact to 1 full turn. |

Mini-rant. Can Honda make the engine any harder to work with? Yeesh.
I cut my hand today just trying to check the oil level. They have all that plastic covering the engine.
Then went to my wife's Mazda 6. Nice open engine bay -- hint, hint Honda.
End Rant... |

Not sure why this thread was moved away from the 2007 MDX forum since the subject was specific to the 2nd Gen X.
Anyway, just did my oil change last night and a few things I want to share:
1. The oil splash guard in front of the drain bolt, although it somewhat works, was more of a nuisance. I typically elevate my drain container with a block wood so it sits very close to the drain bolt thereby eliminating any chance of spillage.
2. There isn't much clearance for me to effectively use my torque wrench on the drain bolt. So I had to jack up the front, loosen the bolt, lower the X, drain the oil, jack up the front, then tighten the bolt back. Next time, I'll do the oil change and tire rotation at the same time since the X would be on stands anyway, or get a shorter torque wrench.
3. The fill hole at the top of the valve cover simply sits too low and the plastic bumper cover gets in the way especially if you are pouring from a 5 qt container. I made a mess thinking I could pour straight even with the help of a funnel. Ended up using a tranny funnel and hose for a much cleaner fill.
4. Torque settings:
Filter - 12 Nm or around 9 lb-ft. If you use OEM filter, there are markings that can guide you. If you start with the filter seated at the mark ^, you should tighten until you see mark ^^^^ at the same spot. Oil filter wrench size "F" from Autozone works on the OEM and Mobil 1 filters.
Drain bolt - Need 17 mm socket to remove. Remember to put in new crush washer. Torque to 29 lb ft. |
