so im going in to the dealer to get the amplifier replaced to fix the bop at startup. anyway i mentioned to them how i had recently opened to the hood and noticed there was a build up of some gunk on the positive terminal on the battery. they said they will look into it will they are replacing the amplifier. In the end they tell me they cleaned the terminal. i was a little confused because i thought they would replace it since it was, atleast i think. leaking battery fluid. He told me its normal for buildup to happen on the terminal.

I guess i just want to know if thats true. the buildup on the terminal was a blue color, looks like dust, but was solidified. is this something that is simply cleaned or should it be replaced?

It's not unusual to have that type of corrosion on the battery. If battery electrolyte was leaking, you'd see painted surfaces beneath the battery damaged. With sealed batteries and modern robust plastic battery cases it's very unusual to have a leaking battery.

There are a few ways to prevent corrosion of the terminals. Any auto parts store will sell treated felt disks (one red, the other green) that fit under the battery terminal clamps. They do an outstanding job of keeping the terminals clean. For a couple of bucks they are a bargain.

Also on the market are small spray cans that spray on a film that also prevents corrosion. They not only treat the terminals and clamps, but also the exposed cables ends and any fittings.

It's pretty common. I coat the terminals with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.

At least once per year, and more often if it looks like it needs it, I clean all the batteries in all of my vehicles with a solution of baking soda. Yes, just plain old baking soda that you find around the kitchen. Soda is basic and the effluent from a battery is acid. Also clean all the area of the vehicle around the battery.

A battery can look clean and still have a discharge between terminals because of the acidic dirt. You can see this yourself by placing the probes of a voltmeter between ground and various locations on the battery case. This sometimes can be the cause of "unknown" battery drains.
