I have been getting an intermittent VTM-4 fault (ie turns on the VTM-4 dash indicator) for several weeks. My code reader ( AutoEnginuity) does not read VTM-4 codes and so I went lloking to see if it was possible to find the error code without a code reader.
Turns out it is possible and very simple.
You just short pins 9 and 4 on the DLC Connector under the dash and turn on the ignition and the VTM-4 light flashes the codes. It flashed 4 long and 3 short to indicate DTC Code 43.
This pointed to an intermittent temperature sensor in the VTM-4 unit, which I replaced. |

Realwing,
Any idea if you can use this process to read DTC codes (shorting a couple pins) as well? |

I think it is possible but I have not verified this.
I know the Check Engine light was flashing at the same time (but I think it was flashing the "no fault codes present" )
Thus shorting the same two terminals may work for engine DTC's
There is no harm in trying - just make sure to short the correct terminals!! I just used a short piece of insulated wire. |
