They make great vehicles, don't get me wrong. So great in fact they time their transmission failures (01 MDX) down to the tee. Mine went out at 104K, warranty expired 100K. I have never seen more posts on the internet for this problem in around the same mileage for any other vehicle. Hummm coincidence? They want me to pay up to $1000 to fix it. Should have been included in the class action lawsuit with their other vehicles (98-02)For me, I just can't trust them enough to buy another one. Maybe toyota is the ticket.

$1000 for a trans replacement? Thats not a bad deal. Have you called Acura Customer Service to try and push down that number?
How long have you owned the MDX?

I agree Acura should do something to assuage the unsatisfied loyal MDX owners.

But you have to remember that the majority of satisfied owners will not be inclined to write about their positive experiences. It's the vocal few that you read about.

I see your point. For 01 and 02 models there is an issue no question. Be curious over time to see how the 03+ units hold up as the design changed.

I'm sure you're educated and well-read to see this is clearly not just an Acura problem. The GM 4L60-E trannys were never the best units to roll out of Detroit, and Mazda has had their share of unit failures. Should Honda do more - yes. Have they tried to address the problem with a new design - yes. Should you call and negotiate with Acura service - yes. Is $1,000 a bad deal for a new unit - no.

You have nothing to lose, so I'd speak with Acura. Over the life of the vehicle has the total cost of ownership been low? Has the vehicle taken good care of you? If the answers are yes, can you say the same about the next unit you buy? Be glad you didn't buy an Infinity QX56....big bucks for nothing but problems.

Again, call Acura and see if you can strike a deal. No mfg is perfect, and most want to work with the customer.

Good luck.

Sounds like they are just giving you a break and charging for the labor only. I don't think the 01 is cover under the 5% odometer adjustment. While it sucks that you have to pay $1000 for the rebuilt trans, that's something you are not going to have to think about for a while.

My neighbor's Honda minivan trans went this last summer. They told me they were going to get a new one because it will cost them about $3000 to replace the trans because they have almost 103K miles. I had them call Honda and they got everything done for free.

I have spoken with The dealer, and customer care this is as low as they are going. Some say not bad, I agree although is still sucks that I have to pay it at all considering this is a systemic issue with their transmissions and just a tad bit out of warranty. I guess it's just a case of Caveat Emptor no matter what you buy.

Assuming you decide to go through with it an pay for the repair (not sure if you have any other option!), can you negotiate in extended warranty on the new trans?

I don't think it works that way.

Rebuilt MDX trannies packed and stored are very few and far between, and that includes OEM rebuilt.

Most likely, your tranny will be pulled and subcontracted out to a local trans rebuilding specialty shop and they will have their own parts/labor warranty for it, but it won't be negotiable because its a third party involved. Ask about the warranty before you agree to it, as you might have some say as to which vendor to have the tranny taken to. Mine came w/ a nationwide 3yr/36k warranty: if it fails while its out of town, any mechanic I take it to will call in for an authorization to have it repaired and paid directly by the original vendor. I think that's pretty fair.
