I am getting readly to purchase a 2003 touring this weekend with about 80,000 miles on it. Should i be scared to death about this transmission?
Please help before it too late |

| I've had an '03 since new. It now has 40K miles. My fingers are always crossed but I haven't had any tranny problems. I do a 3 quart change every-oil oil change and I feel better doing it, but I don't know if it really does any good. There was a change in the tranny's design for '03 but there have still been some reported failures on this site. If you are that concerned try to find an '04. You're buying a used car and no matter what the previous owner says it's still a machine with a lot of parts and ANYTHING can happen at ANY TIME. We like our '03. It's never been a problem for us. The dealer has damaged it more doing minor warranty work and they are the ones that REALLY scare me! It's out of warranty now and I have found a good independent guy that my son also uses for his Hondas and he is satisfied. Dealer ineptitude and their inability to service my car as mandated by Honda/Acura is what is keeping me from getting a new Acura. There are a lot of choices out there now and with gas going up prices on SUV-type vehicles will be coming down due to additional incentives...just wait and see. Be aware that it is recommended to burn 91 octane in the '03 and, with the price of gas, that might be a killer for you. You can do a lot of the work yourself if you get the service manual ($70). You'll save that on your first self-service alone. Good luck on your choice and let us know what you decide. |

I think it depends on how it was maintained. See if there are service records. Also, the test drive is important. Make sure you get on the highway. Floor it and see how smooth it shifts. Also try and get it to downshift. Inspect the car from top to bottom.
This is a vehicle you are probably looking to keep for a while, so the car will definitely get some high mileage. You will be looking to spend some money for some major services or problems that may occur. You should try and find a Acura certified pre owned if your budget allows you to. |

As long as it has been maintained, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The 2003 tranny has an average reliability rating. The 2001/2002 model years have a much worse than average rating: |
