| Can anyone tell me the progression and time to failure on the '02 transmission problem. My '02 MDX has 79k miles. It just started having the problem of hanging in gear with RPM increase in the 25-35mph range. It eventually will shift if you let up on the gas. This occurs about 1-2 times per week at this point. Has anyone has enough experience to know if it will remain like this or continue to degrade? Trying to decide at what point I dump the car as a trade in or push for the repair? Thanks! |

| ... for "transmission failures", or similar. There's a lot out there which you can read. Acura/Honda has been quite arbitrary on how they handle tranny claims. The either cover it all, partial labor or parts, or NOTHING!! It's a crap shoot. Personally, I would bring it into the dealer and have them look at it and get your complaint documented in case it takes a real dump on you down the road. If it hasn't had the recall/oil jet work done on it you are likely to be covered 100% because it was a safety issue (tranny could lock up at speed...a fun ride, for sure). if it did have the work is when you get to play with them. Whatever you do try and get the 3 year/36K mile warranty on the tranny when, and if, they replace it with a rebuilt unit. Good luck, and let us know how things go because there are, I'm sure, a lot of folks on this board getting ready to join you in your experience.. |

| Thanks for the info. I was curious if anyone has not repaired the problem and thus can tell me the life expectency before it really goes south. At the moment it is an anoyance but not a hazard. |

No one can actually predict when it will take a dump on you. Just get it documented because some day, some where, some how, when you least expect it, some lights will go on and some jerking will be felt and WHAMMO!!! you will have become a victim of the dreaded tranny failure. Just pray that you are not in front of a 90,000 pound semi doing 70 mph on the interstate when you tranny locks up!! You might tell the dealer of your concerns when you talk to him. You might also get his name and the dealer's Service Manger's name for YOUR records. Being VERY CALM you might also inform him that you will consider him/THEM/Acura-Honda PERSONALLY LIABLE should you or your family be injured (or worse)due to your tranny failing at speed, should they not replace your tranny, given the miserable history of their lousy transmissions. "It's normal for this year's tranny" is NOT a legitimate reason for it doing what it is doing. "NORMAL" is the smooth transition between gears at any speed and at any time. They know that there is a problem and Honda has spend MILLIONS of dollars over the years trying to satisfy customer concerns and minimize their liability.
JMHO!! |
