As posted in another thread by a very intrepid MDXer, Acura factory bodyside mouldings for the MDX will be available after October 9th. List price on them is 130.00, I will be selling them for $110.00 shipped in the continental US.
Apparently contrary to other info I received troughout the year, this will be the only new accessory for '02, all of the others are carryover. On the list it describes Mahogany as an '02 color, so I'm assuming it will be carrying over?
Here are a few accessories notes from Acura corporate on the '02 accessories:
1. The air deflector and the nose mask cannot be installed together on the same vehicle (duh)
2. The nose mask is not recommended for vehicles with optional Fender Flares (does this mean it will work?)
3. All-Season floormats are designed to be used in place of hte standard carpet floormats
4. Running Boards and Side Steps cannot be installed together on the same vehicle (DUH! :D)
There is nothing that doesn't carry over for '02, so feel free to order stuff! |

Tim,
Glad to see that Acura has come to its senses and decided to continue the tootsie roll tradition.
As a reference point, the dealer where I get service, is offering to put body side moldings on for $220. But at $75/hr labor, this equates to 1.5 hours of work which makes me think they were using non-Acura strips or gouging on their price. |

Hi Tim,
Thanks for all your superb customer service and honesty.
Will you be posting the installation instructions for the moldings? I'd like to see how involved it is prior to ordering them.
I purchased my GG touring/Navi this past May. Luck would have it that I saw it on the lot and when I inquired about test driving it, I was informed that the intended buyer had cancelled his order. The GG Touring/Navi was fully accessorized by the dealer.
I'm talking
[B]Air Deflector and the Lower Trim
Fender Flares
Moonroof Visor
Running Boards
Tailgate Deflector
Rear Splash Guards
Wheel Locks
The inteded buyer may have walked away from the deal because of all the add ons. I purchased it realizing that I could have done without some of these extras, however the instant gratification and emotional hype swayed me to drive away with my new MDX on the same day. I'm still extremely satisfied with the MDX and hope it does what it's supposed to this winter.
Sorry for rambling on....
Once you mentioned 2002 accessories all these emotions were brought back to the surface!
Ok ...back to the point:
Instruction manual for molding installation...
yea or nay?
Thanks. |

Tim, if you've got them, posting a photo and dimensions of the Acura moldings might help people (me) decide whether to go sportwing or hondacuraworld...
best,

| Nay, at least for the time being on the instructions. It usually takes a month for the Acura parts CD to carry the new instructions, and we haven't got anything in print yet. Hopefully within the next couple of days. |

I can't even place an order until October 9th. I'll let you know as developments arise. |

To quote Tim,
"Acura factory BSM..."
Any idea (a speculation?) if Sportwing is actually an OEM?
That picture should come handy! Especially if Sportwing is NOT Acura's supplier and the "price war" should ensue... |

TIm,
Please, please, please save me a black molding. If you get the install instructions, let me know. If you can fax it to me, I iwll pdf it and email back to you the same day to post.
Hope all is fine, and how about a group buy. You have the biggest MDX group in the word right here.

| Tim, we will need more info like are these side moldings glued on using some type of adhesive. Are they black or are they color keyed? I'll be interested in a group buy as well. And if you are going to give a special discount to have someone put them on and post pictures, I volunteer! |

I know as much about these as you do, for the time being. All I know is that they don't come in Emerald, but they do come in every other color.
Test pilot? Hmm......
(Oh, Tim, for crying out loud, you've done it now!........) |

| Tim, if you are looking for a test pilot then I would be glad to try them out for you. |

Hey Tim,
You definitely opened a can of worms.
How does this sound - sending the first one to post one free molding set per color to be posted on-line in the gallery.
Maybe we could all takepics and forward them to one individual who could post them all in one posting. That would be cool - one place to go to see an installed sample of each color.
If you go for this - PLEASE PLEASE send me a black one.
If you don't go for this - how about half price for one in each color to be posted in the gallery. ANy way you do it - I definitely want one in black.

| Looks like the new Acura moldings and the current "preferred brand" are about the same price. Any word on the differences? Any idea what Acura dealers are charging to install only, with material provided? |
|

I'm sure when Tim gets some visuals for us, he'll post them. Cripes, he just found out about the Acura moldings this morning. :D
Then, some enterprising Xer will be able to assemble a side-by-side comparison in the gallery. (Of course, I can be patient for moldings considering my MDX is still months away...)

Seems the Acura Engineers are as consistent as the taliban. Here's an excerpt on the 2002 MDX:
DOOR DESIGN
Many SUVs have plastic cladding on their lower body surfaces. A damage analysis study by MDX engineers revealed that cladding positioned low on the side of the vehicle actually offers little protection from parking lot and garage scarring because contact is far more likely to occur at the mid-point of the door or higher. For this reason, and in the interests of providing customers with a clean, strong, and elegant appearance, MDX is not equipped with side-surface cladding.
 But now it seems Acura will offer it as an accessory. There also seems to be a lapse in logic. If they discovered that dings are more likely to occur at the mid-point of the door or higher, why didn't they put side molding there, DUH! |
|
|
| wmquan |
Eh, Acura will just put marketing spin on it.
<MARKETING_MODE ALT=BS_MODE>
The MDX has a clean, strong, and elegant appearance, unfettered by unnecessary adornments. For those customers who prefer a more traditional visage as well as extra protection for certain situations, Acura offers them the choice of an elegant, precision-machined, and color-matched side molding package.

... I also will be vey much interestd in the Mahogany Moldings.
Another question regarding '02 changes: Will '02 OEM side-steps be available in silver &/or stainless steel? |

Moo was the first to ask, so strap your goggles on and prepare to test pilot (I have to be fair here). So, here's what we'll do:
I'll get in touch with Moo regarding the first set of mouldings. Then, I'll offer a group buy on them if one of you will be so kind as to start a thread on them. The group buy price on them will be 98.00 and will last until October 26th, we will need 25 people (I'm cutting this very close, especially when I have no idea of the size of the box).
Now, you ask, how can I think of getting the mouldings without knowing what they look like? That's where Moo will come in. You can post your intentions on the group buy thread and order any time, I will begin to ship the mouldings on October 15th, praying that Acura will have enough in stock to keep up with demand. Moo's mouldings should go out on the 10th or 11th (I'll overnight ship a set in).
Sound good? |

| Any info on how wide they are or are they the same as the one I saw in the gallery shots? I'll be in on the group buy for sure! |

Hi Tim,
If you can recall, I just called you in this afternoon asking about shipping information to Toronto.
My X is coming in mid December, would you please save me a set of Silver side molding? :)
I will give you a call before I come all the way down to Buffalo for the accessories I need.
BTW... do you do powerdercoating on the Acura Side Step? If so, how much and how long would it take? I am thinking of having them coated in Silver to match my X color...
Talk to you soon and thanks for the info! :)
Oracle |

|
| hondacuraworld |
Nice talking with you :)
I don't do the powdercoating, primarily because of the price. NYS environmental laws make it such that companies that use any kind of acids in plating have expensive recycling tanks and such. We pay about twice what anyone else does to have these jobs done here in NY. |
|
|
| TheWorm |
Oracle,
Rail and I, to my knowledge, are the only ones so far who have silver-powdercoated our steps. We both used Andrews Powdercoating in SoCal. Tim shipped to them, they powdercoated, then shipped to us. They did a great job -- about $300 -- and have the color-match info on file for others (just mention me, Rail and the MDX and they'll remember).
www.powdercoater.com
You can click on the sidestep link in my sig for pics and more info (and a link to Rail's, too). |
|
|
| Oracle |
Thanks Tim and TheWorm for the information.
If I order the side step from Tim, can Tim get the powdercoating done for me from Andrew's. Then install it for me when the powdercoating is done? If so, what will be the total cost? I guess Tim will charge for labor as well?
Thanks again! :)
