Transmission - my question and interpretation after reading tons of archives! - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've read tons of archives here. It sounds like hanging in gear and not upshifting is a transmission problem usually confined to the 01- 02 models. It sounds like the 'rumblestrip' vibration that occurs during upshifts at lower speeds is a torque converter problem (which is not necessarily confined to 01- 02 models). Is that a reasonable assessment?

That's the question.

Here's the background.

I have a 2005 (build date 11/04) and it has gotten the 'rumblestrip' vibration. It is very repeatable. In D5 on flat ground between 35-40mph at very light throttle it tries to upshift all the way and makes the rumble vibration. Add a bit more throttle and it will downshift fine ... then let off slightly and it upshifts and rumbles. I can make it happen over and over again. It only happens in D5 which leads me to beleive it is an issue with the torque converter trying to go into full lock mode.

If I leave it in D4 its fine. I'm not sure I need to be in full overdrive with locked torque converter at 38mph anyway.

I plan on getting it to the dealer in the next couple weeks and will update this post on the results, but I appreciate hearing any input or experiances.

I have the same issue as you. I don't know if it's suppose to be like that since my transmission is brand new ( 8,000) miles.

I though it was the bushing that causing that. Have it check and let me know.

have you checked your EGR valve ? I know there are some issue there that tend you make you think its transmission issues...I'd bring it in and let them run a code. How many miles do you have ?

I'm at 41,000 miles. It has not set any EGR codes or misfire codes (which often link to an EGR problem). ... No trouble codes or VTM lights.

The rumble is simultaneous with the final upshift point. You can hear and feel the shift points. As I count it off, the rumble happens at "shift" # 6. Gears 1,2,3,4, then 5 (overdrive) and then 6 (locked torque converter). The step between 5 and 6 should be silent and un-noticeable since it is not a gear change or overdrive reduction. The torque converter itself is probably fine, but I'm guessing the lockup coupling is damaged or electronic controller is having problems engaging the lockup coupling.

My 2001 MDX is at 114K miles and I've got the rumble problem as described. Vehicle is at the dealer right now. First they told me it needed a new transmission and motor mounts. When I pulled out the transmission recall letter from american honda (with 100% replacement) they changed their diagnosis to cupped tires and motor mounts. Don't think they wanted to eat $3800.

The tires are relatively new Bridgestone MTs (<5K miles). They are a bit more aggressive than prior tires, so maybe there is some correlation. I didn't correlate the start of the rumble with the new tires, but its possible.

After reading all these descriptions of vibration at 30 to 40 MPH, level ground, not under power, and strange sounds from what feels like the front end, which I too was experiencing, I took my 2001 MDX to the dealer. They drove it and said that the Torgue Converter was worn out and would eventually fail. My MDX has 131K miles and had been running great until a few months ago when I began hearing and feeling the vibration referenced above. The dealer indicated that even with this mileage, Acura might participate in replacing the tranny and torque converter. After the service dept visited with Acura, they agreed to supply the parts at no cost to me as long as I updated the maintenance. The only thing missing from maintenance was replacing the timing belt. After all was said and done, the Timing Belt cost about $700 and the labor on the remanufactured tranny and torque converter, which I did have to pay, was $900. I was astounded that Acura would agree to this, but they did and we are running great now.

I have an '04 MDX with nearly 47,000 miles on it. While down south in warmer weather, we started hearing the rumble strip sound. Since I'll be out of warranty in 3,000 miles, I immediately took it to the dealer on our return home. Of course, the sound stopped. The dealer acknowledged that it's probably the torque converter but that he can't replace it until they hear the noise and if it's after 50,000 miles, I'm stuck with the bill. After reading all the posts here, that's not acceptable. I will be contacting the dealer and Acura directly first thing this morning. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Transmission issues on all 1G models? My 05 is getting a new one.

I decided to put a new post in the general discussions section hoping to get more viewers and more feedback. .... but I didn't want to leave the subscribers to this thread hanging!

Enjoy!
