Greetings all, this is my first post. I purchased my 2008 X in October 2007. I did most of my research for the vehicle here - thanks to all for your advise and comments.
I'm at 4400 miles now and the Multi Informaton Display is signaling for an oil change due soon (I'm at 15% now). I would prefer to do this work myself for several reasons not least of which is that my nearest dealer is located one hour away.
While doing my research in the fall of '07, Lionspeed had what I thought was an excellent description of the necessary tools and materials needed to do this work. Unfortunately, I cannot find his post (yes, I did try to use Search several times :) )
The information I had recorded at that time was:
Honda Oil Filter Part # 15400-PLM-A02
Oil Drain Plug Washer, (1) Needed
Filter Wrench (Genuine Honda)
17 mm Drain Plug Wrench
Do I have my information correct and are there any other suggestions for DIY oil changers?
Thanks,
~Dave |

Hi Dave. Welcome & congrats on your '08 X & first post.
Regards to oil change, seems like you got the parts down. I only use Mobil-1 & it'll take 4.5 qt. There is barely extra room underneath the X but enough at least for me to change w/o raising the X. Oil will drain sort of in horizontal direction so I've used a piece of aluminum foil to divert the oil down to the pan. That is all to it really.
BTW, I changed mine at 5000K. Page 379 in the manual will show you how to do the reset. Following the oil change, a tire rotation would be nice. You should feel better performance after the first oil change. ;) |

| Speaking of oil and Mobil 1, has anyone used the "special" Acura synthetic oil that is only available from your dealer? is is just a rebadged Mobil 1 or some other name brand synthetic? and will dealer's sell you the oil, so you can do the change yourself, or will they only use it if you get it done through them? |

Don't see why you would not be able to buy the dealer as long as it is carried in quarts and not just in bulk drums. |

Why would you want to buy from a dealer and pay their inflated price when you can get the same or a better product from a local auto store?
By the way, along with a superior oil (Mobile 1, Castrol Full Syntech, Royal Purple, etc.) I also use a superior filter such as the Mobile 1 filter.
DO NOT USE WRENCH TO TIGHTEN FILTER. Nobody had ;mentioned that so I thought I would throw it in.

I didn't say I wanted to buy from the dealer, I asked *if* you could buy the Acura synthetic oil from the dealer. The reason I asked, is because you can't buy it elsewhere, and I was wondering if they would sell it without an oil change service. At the same time I asked how it was different or "special" compared to a name brand synthetic. Obviously I wouldn't go to the hassle of getting it from a dealer if it's just rebadged Mobil 1 (or any other brand).

How do you know these are superior to the Acura synthetic? (do you know what brand the Acura synthetic is?). I've always used Mobil 1 in my previous vehicles and will do so with the MDX (it's not due for its first oil change yet), unless of course the Acura synthetic actually does provide some benefit. |

| Try to get an A01 filter if you can. The A02 is a radioactive orange Fram disguised in a blue can. |
