Bought a second-hand 04 MDX Touring Navi/RES a few weeks back with 85K miles and was disappointed to hear several squeaks and rattles throughout the car that somehow were non-existent in the test drive. The banging mettalic sound really tested my patience and it was coming from the rear cargo area. I saw the threads about the 3rd row seat, the headrests stored in the underfloor compartment, license plate cover, the rear muffler heat plate, etc as possible sources for noises, but none were the source of the consistent metallic banging noise that was always present over any sized bumps. It just got louder, the bigger the bump.
Finally got fed up. Today, had my wife drive the MDX over bumps while I sat in the rear trunk with the 3rd-row seat folded. I was shocked to see the REAR HATCH literally MOVE around from side to side, up and down over the bumps. I held it the best I could with my feet and the noise was not there! That movement translated to the noise consistently. Metal banging on metal but wasn't sure where until I accidentally discovered the source. So still in the trunk, I removed the plastic circular cover about 1 in diameter at the bottom center hatch panel where I thought that was the lock release so I can get out the rear hatch. Well, I stuck my fingeri n and felt the entire metal latch VERY LOOSE. Bingo!!! Got out and saw the latch on the bottom the hatch (what you normally see) from the outside and it jiggled about a third inch in all directions. Couldn't believe it. I removed the two plastic anchors to the side of it which allowed me to pull away the plastic liner enough to see the metal SCREWS! They were loose, One was totally out! It was a tight fit, but I managed to get a philips screw driver with the right angle to have enough torque to tighten the three screws. Put back the plastic screws, drove off, and the noise was gone! That made my day and wanted to share it with the world. It's a simple fix for those who may have the same issue. Now if only I could get the other 5 or 6 plastic squeaks and rattles out like others in the forums have complained about (dash, door panel, 3rd row rear panels)... |
