DVD Audio playing questions - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have several DVD audio disks. They don't play in the upper CD/DVD changer, I always get bad disk errors but they do play fine in the lower DVD player. Is this correct? I was under the impression that the upper unit will play DVD audio DVD's and it does have "DVD Audio" written on it.

I have searched this forum and its not very clear but the manual does say the upper unit will play DVD Audio.

TIA

Are you sure they are DVD-A format? Mine work fine in the changer. If it was a DVD Video disk, it would need to play in the DVD player.

Hey mrrrl,

DVD-audio is different from a DVD disk with audio burnt on them, or the DVD disk with music videos. Check to make sure you have the right one. DVD-audio disk typically come in a special case with rounded edges. I hope this helps.

BTW, I'm new to the board and wanted to say Hi to all the "X" owners.

OK, I guess the ones I have are really DVD videos but they have the 5.1 or DTS tracks and play great. So I went and got a DVD-A and it plays in the upper deck, but it will only play the first 17 tracks and it has 21 track (Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road). It gets to track 18 and goes to the next DVD/CD in the player.

So how to get to the rest of the songs?

Also I am looking for the DVD-A "The Eagles Hotel California".

TIA

Some of the DVD-A will have video on them as well, and maybe that's why you are only able to play the first 17 or 18 tracks

i don't know if this makes a difference, but you can also burn mp3's onto a dvd disc.... i think i've got about 800 or 900 tunes on 1 dvd. that's basically almost 5gigs of music! kiss those ipod adapters goodbye... that's nearly 30 gigs of music w/ the 6 dvd changer!

I was dissapointed that I couldn't have an iPod adapter (that would put the playlists on the screen etc). But when I found out you can load up a DVD with mp3 files and see folders and filenames, this seemed like a pretty decent substitute.

However the manual says that the limit is something like 400 songs per DVD. Have you found that this is wrong and that it can actually read the full capacity of the DVD? If so, I'll get started burning! :)

Anyone know of any good aftermarket iPod adapters that give you on-screen support?

i'm glad you found the ipod substitute palatable. i don't know about you guys, but i'm sitting on like 80 gigs of music, more or less.... granted they have the 160 gb bad boy out, but i don't like being strapped down to one format.

to answer your question about the 400 song max, i guess i missed that memo because i just scrolled to song number 900 something the other day... so.... i haven't had any issues on that max.

That's great news, I was dissapointed about the 400 song max (Page 224 in the manual).

Scrolling through 900 songs must be tedious though? Do you break them into folders, and if so, how do you organize them? Alphabetically, Genere, Artist? I guess this is why a GOOD iPod interface would still be preferable. Much better playlist support etc.

yes you are absolutely right on all accounts...
i organize by artist then album then song.
sometimes i go by type, but heck when i actually have some time, i check my itunes lists and actually burn those into folders (driving songs, singing songs, songs for kiddies, rock, 80's, 90's so forth and so on) that's why we have a cd/dvd changer you can put a ton of songs on and tossem when you don't want them... dvd's are so cheap to burn anyhow i don't give it a second thought!

Good stuffl.. thanks! :)

One more question before I stop hijacking this thread

How are you able to burn a Data DVD from iTunes? I know how to do this using Nero and MP3's, but songs I've downloaded from iTunes are copy protected as I understand it and can't be burned in this format, only onto an audio CD I think?

Hmm.. guess I could burn to audio CD, then re-rip to MP3/WMA, then reburn to a data DVD outside of iTunes. Sounds like a lot of work for 500+ songs... heh! :D

hmm...i think you answered your own question... but you are right, most of my music is pre itunes stuff, burned from old cd's and archived. but i did put on a 'few' itunes songs on.

i am curious to try and burn a dvd w/ itunes in an audio format if need be, 5 gb's does go a long ways ya know! that's my next 'project' to see if itunes burns on dvd audio discs...in which case, heck i'll just burn dvd audio and there's no reason to circumvent the itunes properties!
