Blackened tailpipes... - Click HERE for Original Thread

I noticed recently that my tailpipes are starting to discolor. Even after my X comes out of the carwash, the pipes still have a dark residue on them that is difficult to remove (at least with Windex and paper towels).

So, aside from wondering if anyone else has noticed this phenomenon, is there a product someone can recommend that will restore the pipes to their original luster?

craniotes,

If you are referring to the steel exhaust tips, try some steel wool and metal polish. You could always get an after market exhaust.

I can second the steel wool. I have used that method for years on all cars with polished tips.

It works well and does not leave scratches as long as you keep the wool wet. Use a small bowl and keep dipping it in water and you will remove all the residue like an eraser.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll give it a go this weekend. As for aftermarket, I don't know what's out there for the 2nd gens, but Excalibur, your pipes look tight.

Just remember we both said 'steel wool' and not a brillo pad. There is a difference and the latter will damage the finish.

You need to find fine steel wool which you can get in the supermarket. Keep it very wet and you will be amazed how you can easily clean the crud off the pipes.

Thanks for the tip!!!

I'll have to try it this weekend!

Point taken, Ron. I'll make sure to get the fine steel wool (thanks for the heads up).

Are you talking about the chrome or the inside of the pipes? If Chrome, go buy a good chrome polish material. I have one from Germany and it works great ! Its called: Happich SimiChrome polish. Made in Germany. I think I got it at one of the local auto parts shops....

Flitz metal polish and #0000 steel wool is a popular combo amongst the people whose opinions I trust.

I use this on mine. Great stuff! :29:

Don't really know what the fuss is all about. What is steel wool anyway? some kind of metal fabric???

Once in a while I get a piece of kitchen paper towel & slightly wipe the exhaust dry. That is all. Don't really need any cleaning chemical. Does your so called "discolored pipes" turning to black or brown? Does it have anything to do with the engine oil being dirty or bad gasoline?

BTW, my X ODO is currently at 9,000.

+1 for Simichrome.

If you can't find Simichrome, MAAS is also good.:4:

Use the 0000 steel wool. It is the finest.

I think the wrong steelwool will damage and scratch chrome.

Try to use "Barkeepers Friend" available at Lowes/Home Depot etc... with a wet towel or hard sponge.

I too have noticed this, i clean them with windex and a paper towel, but the lower part of the tip turns black again in a couple of days.

I have been noticing that mine keep turning black as well. I thought about that comment about the bad gas. I don't know if you live in on the of the counties that touch Philadelphia but if you do, you get the extra special gas (the kind that costs more). I wonder if the special ingredient is doing this?

I am going to try one of those Mr. Clean white spongy things. I have no idea how they work, but it is amazing what they will clean with little effort. I am then going to try and coat the metal with something to prevent it from happening again as quickly. Perhaps a light coat of wd40.

^^ Thought just crossed my mind here reading this post ...WD40 is highly flammable btw and the muffler is hot ....not a good combination :p

As it turns out , the Mr. Clean Magic Sponge did not work. I was suprised by that because it cleans a lot of other stuff. Windex and a cloth worked ok.

I used the Wd40 when it was cold. It dries and I don't believe it leaves a flamable residue. It has helped future cleanings. Well, so far I have received no reports of flaming tailpipes. That would be kind of cool though.

that would be cool :) lol ...i pointed it out since I saw a thing on tv about it ...people using WD40 and getting burnt really bad since that sh*t is like gas when it combusts ....wonderful product though ...just be careful around open flames and high heat sources with it.
