Hi All,

I owned 2008 MDX for 4 months now and drove for 500miles only. The last time I checked the mileage, it gave me about 8miles/gallon . Was it the same initially for all of you or just for me.

Can some one please give me instructions for better mileage? I drive really short distances on it.

Thanks,

MG

The only way I know in your situation is to walk or get a bicycle

Short distance driving is very bad for gas millage on any vehicle except for hybrids or pure electric.

You get your worst gas mileage being stopped, you get 0mpg! So idling in traffic or at a stoplight will of course bring your average down.

Get on the gas gently. Accelerating at a casual pace is a great way to increase your gas mileage. Being gentle on the gas will give you at least 2-4mpg better mileage for each tankful.

Don't carry un-necessary junk with you. I used to keep a 40lb toolbox in my car "just in case". I took the toolbox out of the car, and woohoo! about 0.5-1mpg better gas mileage.

Basically when it comes down to it you can't beat physics. You have an SUV, and getting that beast up to speed takes a lot of gas. Just enjoy the space and features afforded to you by the car. I highly recommend putting in a DVD Audio disk and cranking it to distract yourself, it sounds almost as good as a rolling home theatre room :)

First off if I read correctly.....only 500 miles ? if so you can expect this until your X is broken in (600 miles per the manual). I hope you have followed the break-in proceedures too! This could explain your crappy gas mileage. It will only get better as miles apply........:1:

Hi

Can you please tell me what it means by
"you can expect this until your X is broken in (600 miles per the manual). "

where is it on the manual.
Fabvsix
in theory while an engine "breaks in" can get so so mileage. It should be better as mileage is applied. I was referencing the "break-in" verbiage in the manual.....

Did you fix a hot tub and read all 460+ pages yet? Its the best thing you can do! :1:

That was valuable information. I will try to read the manual, also will check for "Break-in" as well. Will get back to you again

thanks verymuch

I drive my 07 MDX Sport like I stole it. Hit 90+ mph every single day on the 15 mi mixed highway trip to work. Engine is properly broken in, has 11K mi, K&N filter in the stock airbox and gets a very consistent 16.8 mpg city and 21.5 mpg highway at steady 80 mph. Verified with hand calcs against car computer which is very accurate on my car. There's either something wrong with your engine or your computer if you only get 8 mpg. Even a Hummer H2 gets 12 mpg.

I got my 08 MDX 3 months back and it has done 2600 miles. It gave me 14 city miles/gallon during the first 1200miles and of course in the first month (when it was at 600miles) i took it for a 600 mile highway trip and it gave me 21 on the highway. I really did not check the mileage since then until the last gas-fill and i noticed that it is now giving me 16 in the city.

The mileage kinda increases gradually as the engine sets-in which typically is about 2000-3000 miles. I still think 8/gallon is rediculously low even for an out-of factory engine. Either your trip computer is wrong or you have a messed-up engine. Try to calculate the mileage manually using a hand calc (You can even use the calc in the MDX :) ) from a full-tank to the next full.

Took delivery about 3 weeks ago and just now getting thru the break in period. Up to this point the wife had averaged about 18.8 mpg with most of it around town and going to work. This weekend took a 200mile all highway trip driven at about 65 mph and got as much as 27.8 mpg during one long section on the outbound leg (without AC on) and 24.8 mpg overall on the return leg where it had warmed up and the AC ran most of the time. Had two adults and a big 12 year old in the car so it had a modest load. Granted the speed we travelled at was modest but my impression was that it would settle around the 24 mpg level if I was to take it up to 70 mph or so. Can't complain, even having to use high test gas.

In addition to conservative driving habits and removing excess cargo, you should check your tire pressure. Mine was around 28 in the winter and when I raised it back up to 32, my MPG went up by about 1.

I also found out that "winterized" gas will get less mileage. Also, ethanol will not do as well either.

All that being said, 8 MPG is pathetic. I thought my 15.5 was bad.

Hello,

I moved to a new place and instead of my old short drives for the past 4 months, I started driving little long over the weekend and the computer showed the mileage somewhere between 13-14mpg. Will update you all once I empty the tank with final MPG.

Thanks

I've my X for about 9 months and 18K miles, and average about 18-19mpg city driving and about 25 or so on trips or mostly highway. Actually just returned from a trip to the Carolina shore from the DC area (about 900 miles round trip and averaged just under 25mpg with consistent speeds of 75 to 80. I am very happy with what my X does compared with my old Pathfinder.

I can't imagine 8mpg.....as someone else said, a Hummer does better than that~

what's your driving style mate? If 1 is driving like your grandmother on valium and 10 is driving like a teenager on too many red bulls, where would you rate yourself?

As expected when I first got the x a few months ago I was getting 16.2mpg (hand calculations)....I do 90% city driving and I have a slight lead foot ...:p ...now I am nearly at my first oil change and it is already going up ...it's now at 17.3mpg and I expect it to get a little better as time passes.

When I do get a chance to hit an interstate I get 22-23 easy at 70-80 mph. A good break in period is essential to a vehicles engine performance. Driving it too slow is just as bad as driving it way too hard when breaking in an engine.

I think too slow is worst actually due to the fact that engine manufacturers now use a much finer honing pattern in the cylinders than they once did. Hence the window of opportunity for achieving a good ring seal is much smaller with newer engines than it was with the older rough honed engines. Some people think babying the engine in the break in period is good but it actually will make the engine much slower. Do some research into what exactly is engine break in and what you are trying to "break in".

I've got just under 3k on my car and didn't notice any dramatic change in gas mileage after the break in period. I currently get about 13mpg in the city and about 22mpg on the highway. The only time I have see a number as low as 8mpg is right after I fill up and I have to accelerate back onto the highway. Otherwise, my numbers are much higher than yours. If you commute is really short and you accelerate fairly hard, then your mileage numbers sound about right. Especially if you have a lot of traffic lights. I would second the other persons recommendation to ride a bike if your commute is that short. That's what I do for my 4 miles commute to work.

I have just over 11K now and I have not reset Trip B for the past 9.8k miles now.

Trip B over just under 10k is at 16.4MPG. My daily commute is about 70/30-city/highway. The city drive for me is mostly hills.

Just adding another data point to this discussion.

Update:

Getting 17.7-18.0 mpg city at 5k now....over the last couple hundred miles the mileage has suddenly jumped up quite significantly ....probably because break in is over and my first oil change is nearly here :) ...finally... got the service engine soon light today.
