Has anyone used the hon-sc1 to convert their XM radio to sirius? They say it is not recomended for the tech package, can anyone explain why?

I am waiting to see if the Sirius/XM merger happens. If it does, then there will be little need for this conversion.

I have been wanting to convert to Sirius for a while so I have been following this thing for a while. I too am also waiting but consider the following...

Check out Sirius and XM websites for the packaging and pricing structures. The existing receivers are not suddenly going to have a lot of new bandwidth. To appease current subscribers and regulators, they do not plan on restructuring the existing packages (for some time period). They will offer an enhanced package for money that will include "select" channels from the other service.

The real issue comes down to why you want to switch, what will be in those "select" channels, and if you want to pay a higher monthly fee. It seems plausible that they will merge similar channels (think music) and still claim to be honoring the packaging agreement.

The X factor in all this is what the "upgrade" hardware will do. If the HON-SC1 is morphed to pick up ALL the channels: that might be something still worth installing.

Whatever your view is on the merger, your anger should now be directed at the government. They have taken a relatively simple decision (yes or no) and dragged it on for too long. I guess this is fair because that way everyone gets screwed. Think how many people have bought what will likely be out of date radios in the last year.

I am using the HON-SC1 in my 06 MDX. I do not have navi or the tech package but it works great.

Did you get a response to your question. I have a 2008 with the Tech package and I'm also interested...

Has anybody with an 07 or newer and the tech package installed this package. I am curious if it is controlled the same as the XM system and how it works. Thanks for the replies.

The HON-SC1 does not work on the second generation MDX with Technology Package. Now this is all the 2nd gen MDX's except for the base model. It doesn't work because on the technology package the XM receiver is more than just an XM receiver. It's also the Acura Link receiver. Also the way the system is designed it looks like the data for the audio display is passed through the XM receiver along with bluetooth capability.

Because the harnesses at the XM receiver are 16 and 20 pin (HON-SC1 is 14 pin) you have to connect to the back of the head unit instead of at the XM receiver. Because of this when the HON-SC1 is installed you get XM data and Sirus data competing for each other on the audio display, it flickers every 5 seconds. Also the audio for both XM and Sirus are meshed together. If you unplug the wiring harnesses at the XM receiver (Directed Electronic suggestion) the audio display does not come up. Also 1/2 of the Hands Free system does not work.

Bottom line, there is too much functionality folded into or passed through the XM receiver on the Technology Package MDX for the HON-SC1 to function properly.

Good to know. Thanks for the reply. I guess I will have to learn to live with the XM.

Wow Mesalum, nice solid answer.
Fortunately, I don't have tech so I will be giving it a try sometime in the future.
