Went to my Acura dealer (nearest is 60 miles away) after making an appointment for Sat. Found one person checking people in and a roomful of people waiting - waiting just to get in was no option with kids and wife along so I went to local Honda dealer up the street. Made appointment, no fuss, no muss, had it done in 1 hour, 5-20W Mobil 1, Honda filter and washer, reset maintenance minder = $76 total. Good service, reasonable price. I'll give my dealer another shot at the next service.

Holy crap!! For that kind of time, money and effort, I would seriously think about changing it myself. YMMV.:1:

So what was the breakdown? Usually 5 qt of Mobil1 syn is $28 at my local Walmart (even cheaper when on sale) + oil filter (bought a set of 6 for $30 IIRC, so $5) and a few cents for the washer, $5 for the siphon thingy = $39 and some perspiration. I guess $30 labor is acceptable to some. Not me:D

$76.. damn. I buy $7 for a 5QT jug of regular oil and $3 for a filter. Doesnt take that long to change the oil. Check other fluids and tire pressures while the oil draining. Done.

WHY?????
If you do not change oil yourself, just go to nearest oil change store.
Anyplace can change oil just as well as a dealer.
Not only are you paying an exorbitant price for the service, you are having to pay for the fuel to get there.

Unbelievable! My local Acura dealer has an express oil change, a hand car wash and vacuum the car for $24.95.

I would have liked it to be less expensive but the dealer wanted $90 and Jiffylube wanted $72.99 (for Mobil 1) so I thought $76 and done right and local seemed OK. If I had the time I would do it myself but I don't really have that luxury anymore (so I hazta pay).

Well after some investigation - I was specifying only Mobil 1 5W-20 when getting pricing. I assumed the 5W-20 was required as stated in the MDX manual. I have since found I could have used a less expensive synthetic and while the dealer changed me 5 x $9.88/qt = $49.40. I found it online for 7.50/qt. Filter was $11 and washer was $.90,. Remainder was labor/taxes. Anyway thats how it gets to $72.

I buy it there for about $26.00 for a 5qt jug of Mobil1. I bought a filter and crush washer six pack from Tim.
This should hold me over awhile.
I just bring the MDX to a factory owned Goodyear store and provide the oil, filter and crush washer and watch. Takes twenty minutes and I get charged $12.99 for labor and disposal.
For that price, I won't get on my back.

What are you buying that is $7.50 per quart? I have never seen ANYTHING here that expensive. Even Royal Purple is only $28 per gallon.

I like Randy B's solution - I may try that next time.
Is everyone using 5W-20 and synthetic ? Should I just find the least expensive oil that meets this ?
Thanks to all for the feedback. |

Are our cars running on regular oil, or synthetic. I know average recommended interval by dealer is around 7500 miles, but that seems like too much for regular oil. ??? I got oil change at 3750 and A1 is coming up soon. Now at 6000 miles.
