I was driving the X today and when leaving a empty strip-mall, decided to floor it on the road (it was empty) Well at about 5.5 K RPM's or around 60 MPH, i got a loud pop noise from the car, I stopped flooring it right away, thinking it may be backfire. Has anyone had this happen?
I checked the oil level and it was perfect when i got home. |

I got the gas from HESS station here. I will try a different station when I need to fill up next time. |

I would very much doubt that it is the gas. I also doubt that it would be a backfire. Modern vehicle ignition/fuel devlivery systems just do not have the capability to get to a backfire condition.
That said, I really do not have any reasonable idea as to what would have caused it.

did you guys ever read that old Tintin comic where this terrorist was putting an additive into gas to make cars engines blow up? There was some little song they were singing about going "boom" when their engine went BOOM! I thought it was funny as hell :)
Anyone? |

I had that happen when we first got it, right after break in, in about the same conditions you are describing.

| Same thing happened to me, I floored it leaving a toll plaza and heard and felt a loud pop towards the left front undercarriage. I took it in for service and nothing seemed wrong. Only happened once when new, maybe 2,000 miles on the ODO. |

same here. It seems that the X isn't burning fuel properly, maybe thats why we get so much gunk on the tailpipes... |

| the same thing happened to me once. I floored it once on the hwy to pass a car and I heard a pop too. May be that's why our mileage isn't that great. |

| very interesting its happened to all of us early on.....mine was more like a "miss fire" than a pop sound however....Never has happened again. This was when I just had a few thousand miles on her.... |

| my theory is that if you haven't pushed it for a while the two-stage exhaust hasn't opened up the freer flowing, more direct stage in a while. So, if there's a bit of gunk in there, it might make a sound when it opens up. Just a theory |

I'm pretty sure we don't have a 2 stage exhaust system. Just a 2 stage intake manifold. |

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a dual stage exhaust system. It's really the "Variable Flow exhaust system" (like on the RL) that uses pressure-activated valves in both silencers that are before the mufflers that open accordingly based on the amount of exhaust gases the engine pushes out.
Quite unlike the dual-stage intake system which electronically activates the butterfly valves to be in either an open or close stage.

Yep, except for the auto dimming mirror, the 07 & 08 are the same beast. |

I have a '07 Sport......happened only once right after
a fill-up (Shell Premium) @ 1K miles when I floored it to pass doing about 50 mph. I also own a '08 Tech..has not happened -I have about 1K on that vehicle. |

I don't think it is gas.
I have had it happen a handful of times, each time in the same place...
When I leave my house, about a half mile away is a pretty major road that I have to take a left onto.
When I am lucky enough not to have to stop in the suicide lane, I gun it, and there is a slight hill that I am going up. I usually keep it pegged until around 60 mph, and that is when it happens.
It does sound like some sort of back fire on the exhaust, it occurs when it is changing gears. It is interesting, but I haven't mentioned it to the dealer, mainly because I have only brought the car in for service once. |
