Well, gotta love this one. Was backing out of a parking space today, and went to look at the screen to see where I was in relation to the wall behind me. Looked down and the screen was obscured by the sun glaring on it. By the time I looked up to check the mirrors, wham. :3:

Very slight impact, maybe 1-2 mph. No dents or deformation, but the paint is scratched pretty well. Totally my fault. Damn camera, should just look over my shoulder like I learned in driving school. :3: :3:

Anyone ever paint something like this themselves? Or if I take it to a shop, what do you think I would be looking at to repair?

Thanks.

Bummer, I think this needs a pro to paint it. Question is if they can blend it in vs. doing the whole bumper.

Do not start backing until you look regardless of the system being used.

Sorry to see that. Here are my share of messups:

A few years ago I backed my 2002 MDX into the basketball pole near the driveway when I was backing out. I wasn't paying attention.

The wife didn't see that the kids forgot to close the the 2000 Lexus Rx 300's door when the she was backing out from the garage. The door was damaged, a $300 repair.

I parked the 2004 Lexus RX 330 too close to the garage door and when I closed the garage door it came down on the bumper, making a small dent.

I backed my bimmer into a wood pole supporting a tarp that was not in there before, cost me $200 to have the dent on the bumper fixed.

When you don't pay enough attention, sh*t happens. I am more careful now.

Ouch! Had a few close calls myself.

Few months ago, my wife managed to back my TL into my father in-law's Accord in my driveway. The impacted area is also at the left rear bumper but hard enough to push it in. Surprisingly it was easy enough to push it back out. Paint was scuffed but on a black TL, the exposed black plastic was not terribly noticeable. The silver Accord however required the front bumper to be repainted and the fender replaced. The bumper repair (labor + paint + supplies) was $550. Color match was excellent - I can't tell the difference with the rest of the car.

Good luck in getting this fixed.

And since we are on the subject of expensive screw ups, I took off the bottom half my 2 car garage door because I couldn't wait for it to completely open, forgetting that I had a widescreen TV on top of my cargo basket on my roof rack on my TL. TV was fine and I had the opportunity to replace my cheapy door with a very nice triple layer steel insulated garage door with insulated windows.

Unfortunately, a cab driver managed to drive into my new door 2 months later but that's a story for another time.

Gee thanks. Next time I'll keep that in mind. Do you think perhaps I might have known the wall was there, and maybe cut it a little too close trying to back out of a tight space?

My fault, but I really didn't need the lesson. Think I'm doing a good enough job beating myself as it is.

I'm glad that there is no damage other than superficial.

Maybe a good chance to paint the bumper trim.

I have had similar situation. I hit my daughter's car backing out from my garage. There was no dents just scratches. My paint shop repainted entire rear bumper for$350. I was very happy with the results, my X is nimbus grey and this color is hard to match.
Good luck!

Slighlty more damage to my 02 - both the rear panel and the bumper - cost me $500 cash at a local shop.

Someone recently hit my bumper causing a small scratch. Very small in comparison, but their insurance paid me $350 for it. My guess is you would be look at the same amount, since repaiting an area should be the same if its a small scratch or a large one.

I would think at least.

Sorry to see what happened! Ouch! I just ordered myself a set of back up sensors, because I too feel the camera doesn't cover all situations and loved the beeping alert we got in our last vehicle. Sometimes looking behind doesn't cover every situation, so don't feel bad, you may have still bumped!

I'd get a quote at a decent body shop. That needs more than a bit of touch up paint. :(

I did the EXACT SAME thing in the SAME PLACE on my X, even the SAME COLOR...

However, I was backing up in a parking garage in Vegas a few weekends ago and hit a concrete pillar.

For about $100, you can order a complete kit from paintscratch.com including primer, base coat, and clear coat, plus a touch up base coat pen and clear coat pen. Order some fine sandpaper and rubbing compound too.
You will need your VIN so they can match the paint properly. After a few days wash it and rub it out, then wax it.

Final results: if you look carefully you can see some minor cosmetic deviations from the original paint. This is only visible if bright, direct sunlight available and if you're intentionally looking for flaws. Otherwise, it's very hard to tell the difference. I'll try to post some pics when I have time - I don't have any "before" pics but my damage was equal or greater than yours.

I feel for you I did basically the same at night and didn't see the curved trunk of a tree sticking INTO the driveway at a friend's house. I was sooo pissed because it was my fault trusting the camera and not continually looking out the mirror. Mine's going to cost ~$1500 since I bent some sheetmetal.

I've painted plenty of my motorcycles and I would still probably leave a job like this to the pro's who could either blend well or pull the bumper and paint the whole thing (my choice).

My wife dinged up her Mazda 6 in a similar way. Cost $500 for the repair job, looks like new. Look at it this way, the bumper is the best place to hit, better than sheet metal.

Don't know the cost exactly ...but I would assume 300 or so (500 to me is on the high side)

Is the plastic bumper thing with the reflectors also damaged ??...in the pic I could swear it's scraped as well ...not sure ...if it is ..well then it will be more ...maybe you could take the opportunity to paint it as well :) since you will be painting anyway :p

It is a little scraped.

I don't think I will be painting the bumpers. It is not my cup of tea, although I toyed with painting them a darker shade of gray.

Anyone want to p-shop that for me?
