Iced up driveline? - Click HERE for Original Thread

We went skiing the last two days and coming down the mountain there was a lot of slush that must have sprayed up underneath the car. It was below freezing last night and when I attempted to get the car moving this morning there was a very loud thumping noise from the driveline. Something was hitting the underbody hard repeatedly as the car started moving. I stopped, looked but could not see anything. I let the car idle for a while hoping the exhaust would help melt whatever was jammed up there. No luck. Eventually I just started driving despite all the noise and after a few hundred feet whatever was frozen onto the driveline came loose and the car was fine thereafter. This is the second time this has happened to me with my new '08 MDX. Never had anything like that with my other SUVs. Has anybody else experienced this?

Today I checked under the car for any damage. After raising the car I found the paint worn off the drive shaft for about 5 inches and a groove in the shaft just before the center bearing (There are two long shafts connecting the front and rear transmissions/differentials supported by a center bearing). From the wear marks the shaft must have rubbed against ice in the shaft tunnel and/or around the center bearing. Don't quite understand how that would cause a "thumping" noise...
Anyway I think I'm ok as I don't feel any driveshaft vibration on the highway. Might have to paint the shaft to prevent corrosion.

Reading your post reminded me of the prank we used to have fun with. Take black ty-wraps and strap them around the drive shaft. Leave the tails hanging and when the car starts to move. the fun begins for the audience...
Sorry for hi-jacking, just flashing back on it makes me laugh.
