Replacing DRLs and Parking lights - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey everyone, I'd love to replace the OEM DRLs with a whiter bulb as well as the parking lights. Also would love to do the fogs as well but after reading Trigger's experience with the failed kit he used, I'm not so sure about those. I'm not exactly an auto mechanic type but can definately change bulbs...I've checked in an the local auto parts places for something like Sylvania Ultra Whites but nothing seems compatible. Does anyone have any experience with replacing these?
(DRL's and parking).
RAJBULL
I upgraded my Fogs and parking besides the interior lights. Since you are interested only in the exteriors, the below is the list of lights (Borrowed this list from Lionspeed from one of his older posts)

1. Parking & License light = High-Power Super White 194/168 (Wedge)
2. HID Fog Subaru H11 at 4300K
3. HID DRL V-LED 9005 at 5000K

The fog lights/DRL mentioned here are a couple $100 that are true HID Xenon that comes with a ballast (a small box like thing). If you do not wanna experiment with that, you can upgrade these using cheaper and simpler non-xenon lights but it is as white as the HIDs

Fogs - XENON WHITE H11 FOG LIGHT BULBS. This will cost you about $30.

DRL - MTEC 9005 HB3 XENON SUPER WHITE HID HEADLIGHT BULBS

RAJBULL,

Did you get these from eBay or from a shop/parts store?
RAJBULL
That the parking lights. Costs you about $10

Got them from Ebay. You can also search for them from

2. v-leds.com

This is exactly the look I want....and if it comes with just replacing the bulbs, even better.....NICE!

Where do I get 'em?
RAJBULL
Fogs: (Ebay)
XENON WHITE H11 FOG LIGHT BULBS (This is just the bulbs and costed me $30)

DRL: did not replace them since i thoguht yellows are functionally better

Parking: (Ebay)
HIGH POWER SUPER WHITE 194 168 WEDGE BULBS. Costs you about $10 a pair. You can also try 168 194 1W High Power LED (Xenon White) Wedge Bulb.

Look at the my other post for pictures and bulbs for interiors "replace Map lights?"

You can pretty much get these bulbs from the websites i mentioned in my previous reply. The Fogs/parking takes about 20 mins to replace, so does the interiors. Real cool... :)

LIONSPEED? He's been very quite lately.....

RAJBULL,

Just purchsed these bulbs you recommended. I'll post again after they'll in and working.

Thanks alot for your help!!:D
eujinc
Post pics when you are done.

The DRL swap was one of the more simpler yet esthetically pleasing changes I have done to mine (in addition to the fog light bulb replacement). Definitely stands out from the yellowish stock DRLs.

I like....

so who upset LionSpeed as this has been the longest without having him around? Anybody? Ah perhaps just the snitty weather in California......
LionSpeed
What are you talking about snitty weather in California...... On the contrary. Weather is great, life is good, chelada still flowing & will be flowing much more for this Sat birthday party I'm throwing.

I knew that would pull you out of the woods....

You are very welcome. Actually you need to thank LS, Heat00, Trigger and other folks who had been the guinea pigs and done all the mods before coming up with the best. I was merely the messenger and i havent even done half of what others have upgraded. Mostly cause my wife is treatening to match my upgrade expenses dollar to dollar which she is already doing.... :3:

You may want to look at the posts "Fog light upgraded to HID" to go over one year of research that has produced such a valuable contribution to the MDX lighting community :2:

eujinc,

Where did you get those MTEC 4750 DRL's? I scoured MTEC's listings on ebay and they didn't have them listed.

Any other suggestions?

Same seller I got mine from. He offers lifetime replacement.

Before you get it, send Lionspeed a PM. He might be getting rid of his MTECs as he is now using HIDs for his DRLs.

Geesh, thanks for the advertising to my free service to the community. My mail box is over flown as it is. :2: j/k.

BTW, I still have MTEC 4750 for DRLs. Just HID fog & hi-beam. MTEC still going strong for a tat over a year now. Worth every penny.
lttmkd5
Ok, so I got the parking lights that were suggested and have attempted to replace. However, I'm not sure if my X was manufactured after the Manual was produced becasue it says I should twist and pull socket out and replace the bulb...

Mine is a clip you press and pull out. You don't get the bulb, but only the female end of the plug. The bulb and socket remain in the housing and I cannot get it to spin and get it out. It almost looks like the socket and bulb in one piece rather than a separate bulb.

Have anyone encountered this and how did you get it to work? LionSpeed, RAJBULL or eujinc - and tips???
RAJBULL
I am not sure what is wrong and i seriously doubt that your model will have the stock settings any different than ours. Mine is a '08 model and the other ppl here have 07 model that have the upgraded fogs.

The fogs are the ones which are on the outer side. When you remove the plastic underbody cover (you cannot really see where you want to go), you need to get your hands by your judgement and you can feel the socket in your hands. Twist it and the socket with the bulb slides out. (You can see this through the lens from the outside). Refer to "Fogs Upgraded to HID (really)" for pictures.

Probably you can post some picture of what you are seeeing, so one of us can help you.

RAJBULL, I'm talking about the parking lights not the fogs. I figured the fogs would be a blind thing. I'll see if I can't get a clear picture in the daylight tomorrow. Please check back tomorrow....thanks alot!
RAJBULL
oops... am sorry, i didnt notice that you had mentioned the parking. But my first comment still holds good that i dont think there would be anything different on your MDX.

Check the parking light pictures posted by lionspeed on Page 6 of "fog lights upgraded to HID" (The thread started by MDXlover). It may be a useful reference to you.

RAJBULL, you da man now. I can offically retire from the "light" stuff. It's nice to see the new comers pass down valuable information for the others who seek help. This is what the forum's perspective all about... passing down. :29:
Fabvsix
Yeah before us OLE timers get the new Mod boot........:(

:2: RAJBULL, after about a half hour and some bloody knuckles, I finally got
them in. Man, the sockets were tight...very hard to twist.

Now on the the DRL's and Fogs.

I think I'm going to give the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra's or Cool Blue a try for the DRL's. Can't seem to find the MTEC 4750's on eBay...

Am glad i could help. Cause i had to browse through 19 pages of one thread...another 13 pages of the HID stuff (and further adding one more thread of my own with questions) to put together one single (simple) list. :(

As a fellow X lover, I couldnt help watching anyone going through that process.... i just wish my wife and my boss (though both are synonymous, yet they are literally two different ppl) would let me spend more time on this stuff.

Try the website http://www.automotivelightingusa.co...main_page=index They seem to be having a good collection of bulbs. the Fog is H11 and the DRL is H3 bulbs (Also 9005).

My bad ;). I thought you replaced the DRLs when you said you installed the 9005 HIDs (forgot that both DRLs and high beams use 9005 bulbs).

lttmkd5, the link I posted above was for the MTEC 4750. The 4750 is the Cosmos Blue and the 4350 is the Super White. The numbers are the color temps.

From RAJBULL's link, it looks like that might be cheaper source. The Silvania's you mentioned will work too. I don't think they will be as white based on their specs (4100 being the highest temp) but they should have more luminance.

Yup, eujinc's link is still valid. MTEC still has tons in stock (on ebay). They stock both 55w & 65w. Did they raise the price however? Seems more expensive than before. On the same token, everything nowaday seems overpriced anyway. I would go with what we have lttmkd5, 4750K that is.
lttmkd5
I tried the Sylvania Ultra's and they were not much whiter, which is what I'm looking for. So I returned them and ordered the 9005 Cosmos Blue from MTEC.

The H11 Fogs are awesome. Very white, looks like an HID. Onec I get the fogs in, I'll take a photo and post...

Thanks alot everyone for all the input....
lttmkd5
Finally got the Fogs, parking lights, and DRLs replaced - fogs and DRL's are MTECs.

All are pure white. Look great! I've been having troubles with getting the pictures to come out right so you can actually see how great they look. I'll keep trying and will post as soon it it works out.

Thanks for all the help!

Son, just take your time. You can do it. :1:

:D it's really not a hard process. I might be dumb, but not THAT dumb...

So I'm not sure why this is not working. I have posted pictures to the forum and this thread before, but for some reason they are not appearing.????
