sport model clunking in sport mode - Click HERE for Original Thread

i know i've seen this thread somewhere here before, but i can't seem to find it using the search function!! but for any of you sport owners have you noticed that when you go over bumps and potholes while in sport mode, you hear/feel a noticeable thumping noise? and when you go over the same pothole in comfort mode, the thumping isn't there...

anyone?

thanks
HoosAir
I have the same problem, though I never drive in comfort mode so I did not realize it would eliminate the sound. It drives me crazy, but I assumed that it was standard- it never occured to me that it might be a specific to sport models, which in some ways would be more disappointing given the premium.

Is there a chance that it does not affect all sports and is a repair issue? I never noticed it on any of my test drives but I may have missed it.....

Would love to hear from other sport owners on this.

Mine does it in sport or comfort...I put up a big stink with acura...they had my truck for 2 days and came back to say "Normal operation" of the special active shocks. They all(elite's) "talk" on strong bumps.

It's a trade off you have to take to get the better handling of the elite package.

Now I turn up the stereo :)

I avoid pot holes and bad paved streets at all cost.....Nor do I go "off road" with a $45K vehicle meant for sport driving not off roading....Also I keep the tunes on 99% of the time....

Haven't noticed anything yet but may have to check it out.

I tend to keep my X in comfort-mode for most of the time (wife and kid in the car), but on the occasions that I get to party in sport-mode I haven't noticed any "clunking" noises.

I'll keep an ear out for any odd sounds from the suspension this weekend when I drive up to CT.

i think there might be a TSB out for this, search this has been brought up before.

I've got the non-sport MDX and hear a similar thumping noise when I go over speed bumps. It sounds like the cogs are slipping in the transmission, noise reduces if I move over the bumps at higher speeds.

also has anyone noticed a similar noise when you're just shifting from 1st to 2nd gear at very low speeds?

I'm sure happy I dont' hear like some of you folks do (can hear threw lead walls).....

Brought my 07 to the stealer for the thumping in Sport, less so in Comfort and I quoted the TSB for control arm bushings.

Drove back to back in my car, 08 Sport and 08 non-Sport down the same frost heaved country road. Technician confirmed that both Sports made the same noise in either mode while the non-Sport did not.

Stealer said it's the shock valving on Sport models that makes the noise. I also think the stock Michelins are light weight, stiff and thin tread which contributes to the noise over sharp bumps. Will try a heavier tire with thicker tread depth when these wear out.

I had this issue and got it fixed. Tell the dealership that the suspension is clunking over bumps, and that a buddy in the auto field said to lube the bump stops. That should solve it.

whoa dude! If you're hitting the bump stops that means you're really getting on it - nice!

I had the TSB performed for clunking suspension. The MDX was night and day after this- I had no idea how much it was clunking until it stopped.

No clunking here ....at least I don't think so ...

what's the TSB for this ??

I have an 07 sport. I sometimes get a clunk noise, but I haven't noticed if it only happens in sport mode. I usually put the car in comfort mode when I drive in they city and the switch back to sport for the highway. I have noticed that it needs to be a substantial bump to make the clunking sound. Small bumps won't cause a clunk.

guys guys - the fix is to lube the bump-stops. This means that when you're really making the car lean and/or you go over a sizeable bump, the spring/shock is compressed far enough that the bump stops get touched/whacked. If that bump-stop is lubed, there will be a lot less noise. end of story. Thus, small bumps will not do it.

I'll give it a try as it won't hurt. What kind of lube are you thinking? Straight grease??

No idea - I'm just going by what meance said. Maybe he knows what the dealer used

I had this work done back in December and the noise is back.

This fix is not permanent and the noise will come back.

Search these forums for others that have had the repair done with the same results that I had.

I only hit them once, but taking apart the assembly and lubing it helped it quite a bit. I don't drive hard that often, but when I do hold on to the oh-**** handles.

Did you have to take off the spring from the strut/damper to do this lube job? Looking at the service manual, the front Sport dampers do not have bump stops, unlike the non-Sport. Instead they have spring cushion - looks like a rubber collar.

Correct me if I am wrong but in order to hit the bump stops, wouldn't you have to essentially bottom out the car? You weren't pulling a General Lee with your X were you? :D

only once with the general lee move with the MDX.... but I had the dealer do it, most likely the problem was fixed when the dealer took apart the assembly to lube the bump-stops. It was recommended here by another member, and as well it confused the tech that worked on it too, but hey it works.
