Hi all from sunny Southwest Florida! I'm looking to buy a new 08 MDX with the sport/ent package for my wife and son (+ one more on the way). Anyway I want to get a good deal and I know you guys are full of useful information.
First of all, does anyone know the current dealer holdback on the 08 MDX? I came across a number of $960 online somewhere (I forgot where I found it). Is that a correct number?
If so the following would reflex the real dealer cost right?
Base Invoice Price: $43,587.00
Destination Charge: $715.00
Dealer Holdback: -$960.00
Actual Dealer cost: $43,342.00
With that said I've seen people post about paying anywhere from $500-1500 over invoice for the 08 MDX. Which wold mean that somewhere between $43,842-44,842 would be a reasonable price for this vehicle based on the dealers real cost. But the other posts don't necessarily talk about dealer holdback so is $44,187-45,187 the more realistic price?
I'm willing to contact many dealerships, if needed, to get the right price for the car. With that said should I be going in with a set price (in other words just tell the sales person, I'll buy the car at this price or I'll go look elsewhere) I'm willing to pay for the vehicle and just walk if they won't meet it. Or is it better to go in and negotiate with them by start at invoice and then slowing working up to say $600-800 over? Just curious as to all of your experiences.
It's been a couple of years since I have purchased a new car. I know tax in my area (Lee County Fl) is 6% but does anyone know what tag and title fees run? Any other fees I should expect?
I would like to get the car for $44,200 (excluding fees). Do you think it's possible? Or can I do even better?
Looking forward to your comments and advice! |

IMHO that seems a bit low, but your area may be different. I know here the Sport/Ents are hard to get a hold of so I think they have a better margin on them for the dealer. I guess you will need to start contacting dealers and see what they are offering.
I personally contacted about 10 dealers and told them to give me a price. I know I didn't get a killer deal but between those 10 dealers, only 3 sport/ents were available and only one in my color preferences! Florida may and probably is different but I wouldn't go in thinking you may get invoice on this particular model but YMMV and I hope it does! Let us know how it goes. |

phins2rt,
Thanks for your reply. What would you call a reasonable price then?
any info on the dealer holdback amount?
Also how about negotiating tactics, what works well based on what I described above? |

Holdback I believe is 3%.
A reasonable price will be based on what the dealer is willing to give you. Too many factors in that equation. I paid 46K + TTL for my sport/ent at the end of last year. From the quotes I was getting from dealers, that was a fair price at the time in my area. |

| I got quotes of 600 over inv, 700 over inv, 1000 over inv, and 1500 over inv. Only one (the 1000 over) had my color choice in stock. Neither the 1000 or 1500 dealerships would budge on the price... would not even throw in accessories. I ended up getting free stuff by accident, so it worked out for me. Everybody told me that the sport/ents are really rare, so they wouldn't go lower on the price. |
