Acura had finally done something right, the brakes in the MDX are phenominal, for factory ones in an SUV.
I say this due a recent experience about 30 minutes ago, where the MDX proved itself in braking power.
Some 70 year old guy and his wife were in an RL, waiting to turn out of a shopping center. I was on the main road going 50 MPH, yes that is the legal speed limit, when he decides to turn out into my lane. I was about 20-25 feet from him when I slammed the brakes. The ABS engaged, VSA did not as all four corners braked evenly, and it stopped about 2 feet away from the door of his car.
Also before I started braking, I pushed the horn and kept it on there, but as soon as i started braking, both hands on the outer edge of the steering wheel (learned from a friend who broke his wrists when air-bags deployed) and this dude nor his passenger looked over nor did they look at me when I passed them and stopped at the red-light.
I find it simply amazing that the brakes on the MDX can stop it, a 6350 pound SUV (5900 ish plus the weight of 3 passengers) can stop within 20-25 feet without hesitation.
Just wanted to share my experience with you guys.. BTW, the MDX is good, Its in it's garage cooling off now after all of that. |

| Fasinating story. Thanks for sharing. Similar experience like you but on the '03 Pilot 2 yrs ago. It did great coming to a complete stop at 70mph within feet. I could feel the ABS's system was working "overtime". |

Agreed, the ABS was pretty loud on the MDX, my mom in the passenger seat got slightly scared, she thought that the ABS was my MDX falling apart. |

Pardon me for being so blunt, but the Pilot's brakes suck; same goes for the previous generation MDX. 70-0 mph takes well over 200ft in both vehicles, which is pathetic for a modern-day CUV.
As for our beloved 2nd generation X's, hey, Honda finally got it right. Traditionally, braking has been the Achilles' heel of Honda products (great drivetrains, terrific engines, solid reliability, lousy brakes), which is why I'm glad to see that someone within their engineering team put their foot down and ensured that the new X's brakes were up to snuff. I've had a couple of "close calls" in my X, and had I been driving a first-gen (or a Pilot), I would've wound up in an accident. Of course, the active dampers from the Sport package help here, since they virtually eliminate brake dive, thus ensuring that braking force is equally distributed front and rear.
70-0 mph in 170ft for a 4600lb car ain't bad (not sure where csmeance is getting 5900lbs from, unless he was towing something...).

Yup, it was so loud, I thought I was driving a tank. Well, at least your car & mine did help us avoid a misfortune accident. My pilot did come to a complete STRAIGHT stop as an arrow. No swaying no leaning at all. Was your MDX the same way? |

I would completely agrre with craniotes that the pilot brakes are pathetic for what it should be. I had my friends pilot for a while and everytime i took it out, I was not sure if it would stop like i wanted it to.
The brakes on the X are phenominal, it not only stops where u want it to and on top of that the passengers in the car dont feel thrown around like the other SUVs this size. |

| ...awesome!!!! Whenever I get back into the 03 from driving the 08, the 03's brakes seem so inadequate! You get spoiled very easily with these new brakes. |

That would be the GVWR The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. That is the maximum combined load that the vehicle is rated for.....full wet with all cargo included.
The actual curb weight is in the neighborhood of 4,600 lbs, look it up on Acura's website.
Glad to hear that you stopped in time.
It is likely that you think the brakes are so phenomenal because you triggered the brake assist. This is a safety feature that applies 100% braking power when the vehicle thinks that you need it. It's pretty powerful compared with anything you have ever likely used compared to everyday driving. |

I'll also testify to the X's awesome brakes.
I only had it for a couple of months when while on the freeway around O'Hare, doing about 40mph, the guy in front of me just slammed into the car in front, without braking or nothing. I stepped on the brakes as hard as I could bracing for impact as I honestly didn't think I would be able to stop in time (the adjacent lanes were full). And what do you know? The X stopped without a fuss and with a few feet to spare too. Lucky there was nobody behind me.
So yeah, terrific brakes. Hope I won't have to test them so hard anytime soon though :) |

I totally agree these MDX brakes are GREAT!
I have used them hard only a couple of times when I had to - due to idiots on cell phones or stopping dead in front of me.
And I am coming from Brembos on a Touareg!
The only one thing that bothers me, is that as one person pointed out here, when at a stop, you are pressing on the pedal...it keeps going in and in and in...that kinda frightens me.
The pedal also has a nice soft touch to it....which agin takes getting used to after EU suvs/cars.

I agree that the brakes in the MDX are excellent, but they are not that good. There is not a vehicle out there that will stop in 20-35 ft. from 50mph.

| I think the brakes are very good for an SUV/CUV ...I've driven quite a few and the praying for it to stop feeling has come up quite a lot in others ....but the Xs brake adds to the "It's amazing how such a large vehicle drives like a car/sedan." I must say out of a lot of vehicles that we test drove ...the X felt most car like (which is a good thing for the wife and I) .....and to be honest and not biased the MB GL450 also felt very easy to handle....but then that's a whole other price range :p |

| Hey, we got 1 "negative" out of 35 so far. Must be a 2nd gen mdx's hater. :8: |

| The brakes of the 2nd gen X are definitely much better than some less heavy cars. I had an 02 Maxima SE and the X handles and drives so much better. |

As I suspected, the brakes on the first gneratiion MDX are not that great.
What do you suggest to improve them? |

Bigger rotors & better pads would help. |

First go with better pads, slotted rotors and SS brake Lines. If that does not work, all you can do is lay out 2K+ for a Big Brake Kit which will include a bigger rotor, bigger capilers and also better stopping power. |

I agree the brakes on X are great but sometimes when braking hard, the car jumps a bit when stopping, the car stops on time each time though. This occurs in snowy day and dry day..., anyone else has experienced the similar jump behavior? |

| As a previous owner of a 2003 Pilot, I must said the brake wasn't that bad, but it definitely not as good as the MDX, but we need to compare apple to apple for that matter. Anyway, credit should be shared with EBD :2: |
