This is kind of funny...
My wife needed to make a Target run on Sunday, but thanks to an extended brunch, by the time we got there our son was already asleep in his car seat. Not wanting to disturb him, I agreed to wait in the X with him while she went about her business.
Knowing my wife like I do, it was pretty clear that she was going to be in there for a long, long time. As such, I was going to have to come up with something to do while I was waiting. At first, I got out of the X and made a couple of phone calls, but then it started to rain. No more phone calls. That's when it hit me: Get in back with Paul, turn on the DVD and watch a movie with the headphones on. Brilliant!
One thing to keep in mind here is that whenever we're in the car and Paul starts to nod off, we put on "Avalon" by Bryan Ferry and set it to repeat. Works like a charm. So, thanks to the A/V set up, I was able to sit in back and watch my movie while Paul snoozed to the dulcet tones of Roxy Music's former frontman. All was good.
And then an older 1st generation MDX pulls in next to me. Black with a tan interior, and overall in terrific condition. But I digress... First "mom" gets out to move a shopping car. As she does so, she give my X a good once over. Then "son" gets out and gives my X a good once over. Once "dad" finishes pulling into the spot, he gets out and proceeds to give my X a good once over. Before I know it, I've got an entire family pressing their noses up to the windows trying to get a peek at the interior, and here I am sitting in there watching the latest Harry Potter flick while my 16 month old son is sleeping to Bryan Ferry. In a Target parking lot. They must've been oogling for half-a-minute before "mom" realized that not only was the car running, but that there were actually people inside of it.
Even after making gestures of apology and walking off, they still couldn't help looking over their shoulder to check out the lines. Judging from their reaction, they were in the "love it" camp (I've definitely had my share of derisive sneers from 1st gen owners, however...).
Regards,

Great story. I have the privilege of comparing daily since I kept my beloved 01 but now use mostly the 07. Here in my part of the world, though, full-size SUVs and pickup trucks are the norm, so sleeker crossovers like the 07 MDX and Mazda CX9 rarely hold the common person's attention. Yukons and Suburbans rule here.
P.S. Hopefully you don't have the childlock on. I once managed to lock myself in the third row and had to perform some acrobatics open the second row window and open the door from outside since the second row was occupied by carseats. :D |
