First post,
It is my second Acura! I totaled my 01 CLS in 2006 and since than I was stuck driving our 99 Sienna LE. Finally, my wife privately sold it last Friday. It had 125Kmiles.
On Saturday, we went shopping for an MDX.
In Short, we stopped by local (DFW) independent luxury car dealer. He had 5 MDX.
Here what we got:
2004 MDX Touring, NAV and RES
Black on Black
66500 miles
Options:
Chrome OEM Wheels, Acura key locks with misising key!
Sports Tires Goodyear Assurance
Side Rails
Roof Rack (is it an option?)
Towing hitch
Cargo Cover
All Weather mats.
Splash Guards.
Extras: Dealer Serviced (all regular services) and Extra Glossy Paint :2:
Asking price: $24K, Negotiated price $22.5k + Tax/Fees = OTD $24k.
State of Origing CAL, then sold to Houston, then Dallas.
Did I get a good deal?

BTW, I was so happy I almost got a 2005 RL with 33K miles.... |

Congrats on the purchase. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me with some nice options.
I suck at negotiating. What amount did you initially offer for the car before you both agreed on 22.5k?
Thx |

The MDX just came in from Auction and still covered with dust and not detailed. My only fear before negotiating is that I did not have a reference price for this X with miles and options (KBB, Edmunds valuations).
First, mistake my wife did (do not do that), she replied to the simple question (did you like that X, is this what you are looking for? With revealing joy and excitement. The Seller (the business owner) knew that we are real buyers and he had the upper hand to keep the price as high as possible.
Starting asking price was $24k, my wife counter offered $20K which is too low. He was willing immediately to lower it $500 and then $1k to $23k. I knew he can do better. My wife did another second mistake by upping the offer to $22k. and he started taking our info to write down the deal with all fees, tax and etc.. The base price was $23k and OTD was $24750. I offered $24k OTD and and he gladly accepted our offer by getting our X washed and clean in less than 2hrs...
Back, home my Online Price Research revealed that what we paid was Private Value. Since, we love our new X, I was very satisfied with the selling price and the nice treatment we got.
We might be able to get it for $500 to $1k less if we played our cards nicely. But, my wife wanted this X! |

Thanks for sharing the story. To me, it feels more difficult to haggle over a used car because each car is unique. Unlike a new car, you could go to various dealers and also compare to what others paid.
But in the end, all that matters is that youre happy. |
