Yikes! MDX MY-07 Bearing, Timing Belt, etc. - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi all, I have been reading this thread since before I bought my 2007 MDX over a year ago but just recently registered so that I could share an experience, and see if anyone else has had a similar issue.

Went in at 15K to get an A1 service at the dealer where I purchased it. Dropped it off and also told them that I had been hearing a squeaking for about a week, thought it could have been a belt.

Got a call later in the day that it was something about the pulley bearing related to the timing belt. They were going to fix it under warranty, and that Acura also reccomends that they replace the timing belt and H20 pump as well.
(note, I know a bit about cars, owned a classic 71 cougar convert that I worked on myself, so I am not a complete idiot around an engine).
Anyhoo, after I picked it up, both my wife and I noticed that it sounded different when punching the gas. Sounded more like a mustang. low and throaty when kicking into higher gear to accelerate.
I mentioned this to the dealer who said that it had all checked out all right and that they didn't hear anything when they test drove it.
I could have just said OK and left it at that, but we just trusted our intuition.
I brought it back in and took two different mechanics on test drives in my car and had them pull another MDX off the lot to compare it.
Both mechanics heard the difference, but one of them commented that mine sounded better. I think it was a reference to that mechanic liking the muscle car sound. I, on the other hand just wasn't satisfied, knowing that something had changed since I dropped it off and since the mechanic didn't know what the problem was, I wanted an answer. Believe me, they were nice, appologetic, gave me an MDX loaner, but at the same time, I felt a little bit like I had to be my own advocate and they were perhaps thinking that I was just being a picky pain in the arse customer. They treated me well, but again, it only got looked at because I insisted.
They called me back the next day to say that the 'cam' was off by one tooth, and that it was engaging the vtech too early, which gave me more power sooner, but less power later. Said it sounded much better now and I was all set to pick it up.
My wife went to pick it up and when they pulled it up she asked them what the new sound was. She said it sounded horrible.
They said, 'give me a minute" and took it back into the shop.
Came out a few minutes later and said it needed a new alternator and since it was late in the day, would have to give it back to us the next day.
That is today. We are waiting to hear back, but are a bit disappointed that it seems like our car is having a catastrophic failure.
When they originally told us about the bearing issue the service person said that they had heard of similar issues on previous model MDXs, but that this was the first MY-07 with the issue.

Anyone have any thougts?

It is all under warranty, but since the shin bone is connected to the knee bone, we are a bit worried about what is going to happen next, and when that is going to surface.

thanks.

My $0.02 thoughts,

1. Your one year old car is practically still a new car by nature. It shouldn't be making you lose sleep at night thinking what's going come up next. It should be a worry-free + stress-free car... Having said that....

2. Now facing the problem. Your stealership's mechanics/service dept., sound like a bunch of morons & retards. At this point, I don't know if I can TRUST them any longer or move on to the next stealer.

3. If I was in your shoe right now, I would cut my loss & trade it in to something else as soon as it is fixed, (assuming this car a real bad LEMON one). You really don't know exactly the damage the mechanics have done. I am the type of no taking chances person & this is what I would do. Good luck & let us know after the fix.

P.S. Make sure to document everything if you haven't already done so just incase for future claim.

Maybe it's time to get a second opinion from a different dealer? These guys sound like they may replace the entire car piece by piece! Good luck.

This is very stupid, what they are doing. Call acura client services and file a complaint. They have replaced major parts of the motor already and don't have a clue what they are doing. Also I do not believe that it is cam's that change the activation of VTEC, it is the car COMPUTER that uses COMPUTER controlled solenoids to control it. I say file the complaint, and get a different dealer to look at it. An alternator? Come on... If you want to stay at that dealer, my opinion of it is that you test drive the car and see what noises it is doing or what feels wrong. Come back and report, and we can tell you possible real issues.

Thanks for the reply everyone. I already called and filed a 'dealer complaint" and have a record of it.

We'll see what happens.

I agree that the quality of the service seems to be a major issue here.

After driving the car with two of the service guys inside the head of service came out to talk to me and when we were walking by the front of the car noticed that the hood was not completely down. They had not closed it completely.
just bad signs all around.

The whole time we have kept telling them 'take as much time as you need to get it right', because we want them to get it right, so it is not as though I am being a pain in the arse.
All things considered they are lucky they have not seen my anger yet. I am just waiting until it is all said and done to figure out next steps, including bringing it to another dealership.

There is also a 'certified acura service center" that is not a dealer nearby, where my officemate brings his RDX.

Do you think it is OK to bring it there for the second opinion, or should I bring it to a full dealership?

thanks again everyone for the replies.

Ditto.

Don't even think about going to another dealer.

Sounds like they were right by the cam being off by one tooth, but that has nothing to do with the VTEC, I would think.

These guys are morons. Call Acura and tell them you are fearful these guys are doing more damage than good.

All the years I've been active on these Acura/Honda site do we hear about "engine" issues....They build solid engines! Remember what is stamped on the valve covers: HONDA MOTOR COMPANY.
It sure sounds like you let some morons perform incorrect repairs......I would bring the car to another dealership that Corporate recommends and make sure they follow up with that dealership. Also let the Service Manager know you reported them. They don't like that one bit......
Keep us posted....

Oh and the alternator excuse is a cover up due to their FOOK up.....

Yup, alternator excuse. So retards. In their mind, we are a bunch of 5 years old IDIOTS. I stand firm, they're bunch of morons. :creep: :creep: :creep:

The stealer has morons for mechanics...or is purposely doing this to inflate their servce repair revenues, as they get the money from Honda.

I think the chances the car is a lemon are REMOTE!

Honda builds cars that run well...forever !
