I had been experiencing some very noticeable shimmying when braking from moderate to high speeds in my 01 MDX. I thought it must be the brakes, so I took it to the dealership, but they said they didn't find anything wrong. That was about 6 months ago.
The service light came on a couple of weeks ago and they recommended a slew of things to do on it, including new brake pads for front and rear and new rotors in front. I told them the brakes checkout fine just 6 months ago, but they insist that they need to be replaced.
I'm about to have a buddy of mine do my brakes this weekend, and would like to know if anyone here things the rotors are usually a main culprit for they shimmy I was experiencing.
In addition, are Pepboys ceramic pad any good, or should I get Akebonos and only Akebonos? Any recommendations on rotors?
Thanks! |

| Warped rotors are usually the cause of what you are describing. |

| Thanks! Do you recommend the Brembo, or will something like Raybestos Ceramics (professional grade) do? |

| Can you tell which axle is giving you the problem? I would just replace the rotors on that axle unless the other is too thin. I replaced my fronts with brembo blanks and akebonos. I also replaced the pads on the rear with akebonos. How many miles are on your X? |

I can't really tell which axle it's coming from, but the dealer said the front rotors needed replacing, so I'm assuming it's the front.
I have only 64k on my car, which my wife does most of the driving.
Thanks for your post. I think I will go ahead and get the Brembo rotors and Akebonos pads. |

All the parts has their service life. For the rotors and pads, there should have a minimum thinkness befroe you should replace them. Having new parts of course the easiest way to solve the problem. But with minor adjustment, it may have the same effects but with much less expenses.
Are your brake parts out of specs? If not, for rotors, you can re-surface them. For pads, unless it's too thin, they should work fine with re-surfaced rotors.
And, I noticed some warped rotors resulted from improper driving habbits. Some people drive the car using right foot for gas, left foot for braking, and keeps the left foot on the brake paddle so they are ready to brake any time (nervous drivers, like my wife). This normally causes unintentional braking while driving, generates excessive heat and warps the rotor.
I remember I once resurfaced 2 rotors on one of my old cars. the rotors were very thin, close to the minimum limit. But I decide to use them anyways since they are still within specs. I drove the car for over 5000 miles without any problem. Some female member in my family drove the car for one day and warped both rotors. Why? The left foot/right foot configuraton mentioned above. One of the examples I experienced..... I re-surfaced both, and they are still serving that car, over another 8000 miles so far. |
